{"id":254655,"date":"2025-10-27T13:55:11","date_gmt":"2025-10-27T13:55:11","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us\/254655\/"},"modified":"2025-10-27T13:55:11","modified_gmt":"2025-10-27T13:55:11","slug":"knee-osteoarthritis-pain-may-be-eased-through-aerobic-exercise","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us\/254655\/","title":{"rendered":"Knee osteoarthritis pain may be eased through aerobic exercise"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmh546hi4000x26p4fm1c8fot@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            If you\u2019re experiencing joint pain in the knees, the solution might be to walk it off.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmh54gkkn000g3b6nzh6j6eeg@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Aerobic exercise can reduce pain, improve movement and enhance quality of life for patients with knee osteoarthritis, according to a study published October 15 in the journal <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bmj.com\/content\/391\/bmj-2025-085242\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">The BMJ<\/a>.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmh54gkkn000h3b6n5n33bdur@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Around <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cdc.gov\/arthritis\/basics\/index.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">1 in 5 adults<\/a>, or 54 million people, are affected by some type of arthritis in the United States. The most common form is osteoarthritis.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmh54gkkn000i3b6nb21hx7ai@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            \u201cOsteoarthritis is wear and tear of cartilage, or the covering at the end of bones, which leads to pain, stiffness and decreased joint function,\u201d said Dr. Antonia F. Chen, chair and professor of orthopedic surgery at the University of Texas Southwestern Medical Center, via email. She was not involved in the study.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmh54gkkn000j3b6n8168wqph@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            \u201cIt is incredibly common \u2014 sources have estimated that <a href=\"https:\/\/my.clevelandclinic.org\/health\/diseases\/5599-osteoarthritis\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">80% of adults<\/a> greater than 55 years old have some arthritis, and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.who.int\/news-room\/fact-sheets\/detail\/osteoarthritis\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">500 million people<\/a> are affected by osteoarthritis worldwide.\u201d\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmh54gkkn000k3b6nl6vzdugs@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Some <a href=\"https:\/\/www.who.int\/news-room\/fact-sheets\/detail\/osteoarthritis#:~:text=Key%20facts,benefit%20from%20rehabilitation%20(3).\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">causes of osteoarthritis<\/a> include injury, preexisting joint disease, specific metabolic diseases such as obesity or type 2 diabetes, and genetics.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmh54gkkn000l3b6nkuvlmu1i@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Osteoarthritis is a leading cause of <a href=\"https:\/\/pmc.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/articles\/PMC3766936\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">chronic disability<\/a>, and one of the most commonly affected joints is the <a href=\"https:\/\/my.clevelandclinic.org\/health\/diseases\/21750-osteoarthritis-knee\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">knee<\/a>. While knee osteoarthritis isn\u2019t reversible, there are ways to reduce pain.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmh54gkkn000m3b6nvk14owjx@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            \u201cAerobic exercise consistently showed the greatest benefits across almost all outcomes,\u2019 said Dr. Lei Yan, the study\u2019s first author, in an email. \u201cIt reduced pain, improved movement and gait performance, and enhanced overall quality of life more effectively than any other exercise type.\u201d\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmh54gkkn000n3b6n7s8rsc41@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            <a href=\"https:\/\/my.clevelandclinic.org\/health\/articles\/7050-aerobic-exercise\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">Aerobic exercises<\/a> are rhythmic and repetitive movements, such as walking, jogging, cycling and swimming.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmh54gkkn000o3b6n4h04a012@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Aerobic exercises \u201chelp nourish the joints, they strengthen supporting muscles, and they reduce pain,\u201d said CNN fitness contributor Dana Santas, a certified strength and conditioning specialist and mind-body coach in professional sports.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmh54gkkn000p3b6nm7z1sgx5@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Patients with knee osteoarthritis should be doing \u201clow to moderate-impact aerobic activity. This is not high-impact aerobic activity, and people with knee osteoarthritis should definitely avoid running or plyometrics, like jump training,\u201d Santas said  .\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmh54gkkn000q3b6nl3lbhqlt@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            You don\u2019t have to aim immediately for <a href=\"http:\/\/cnn.com\/2025\/07\/23\/health\/daily-steps-how-many-wellness\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">10,000 steps<\/a> a day or <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnn.com\/2020\/11\/25\/health\/world-health-organization-physical-activity-guidelines-wellness\/index.html\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">150 minutes<\/a> of exercise a week, which are both common recommendations for exercise.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmh54gkkn000r3b6n28ekwkla@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            For patients just starting to exercise, walking or cycling for five to 10 minutes a day can help you get started in receiving those benefits and restrengthening the muscles around your joints, according to Santas.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmh54gkkn000s3b6nyolg3ia6@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            But before starting any movement, you should properly warm up.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmh54gkkn000t3b6nbulrkw3f@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            You can start by \u201cmobilizing of your ankles and your hips\u201d with stretches, such as ankle circles or simple <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnn.com\/2025\/04\/25\/health\/hip-exercises-knee-pain-relief-wellness\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">hip mobility<\/a> stretches, Santas said.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmh54gkkn000u3b6n8k52k20b@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Being conscious of your body during these exercises and pacing yourself is also key.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmh54gkkn000v3b6nb59leac9@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            And it\u2019s important for people <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnn.com\/cnn-underscored\/health-fitness\/best-knee-brace?utm_source=internal&amp;utm_medium=mainsite&amp;utm_id=features\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">managing knee osteoarthritis<\/a> to avoid doing deep squats and twisting their hips because if hips are tight, then the movement is \u201cgoing to go to the joint above or below, which is the knee,\u201d Santas said.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmh54gkkn000w3b6n6uhx7fys@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            No matter what aerobic exercise you choose to do, you should \u201censure that your knees, which are a hinge joint, aren\u2019t being asked to do something that they\u2019re not designed to do, because that\u2019s only going to cause more issues,\u201d she added.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmh54gkkn000x3b6ny6swzjv4@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Similar to aerobic exercises, low  or moderate-impact strength training can also help patients with knee osteoarthritis.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmh54gkkn000y3b6nsxemjen1@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            An easy exercise to start with is a single-leg Romanian deadlift or RDL.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmh54gkkn000z3b6ndpnrpvku@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            This movement can be modified by shifting your weight to one leg and coming \u201conto the toes of the opposite leg, so that you\u2019re not putting weight\u201d on the nonworking leg, according to Santas.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmh54gkkn00103b6nnmxm5hiy@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            If you\u2019re struggling with balance, you can also hold onto a wall, \u201cand then you\u2019re just hinging from your hips to come down and then back up,\u201d she added.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmh54gkkn00113b6nk9m2vni5@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Other <a href=\"https:\/\/health.clevelandclinic.org\/osteoarthritis-knee-exercises-stretches\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">exercises<\/a> include stair stepping and leg extensions.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmh54gkkn00123b6n196wfsx4@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            While strength training and aerobic exercise can improve mobility, \u201cthe benefits depend on consistency \u2014 patients don\u2019t need to train intensely, but they do need to keep moving regularly,\u201d said Yan, a doctoral student at the Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmh54gkkn00133b6n00w8f22m@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Aside from exercise, other methods of treating pain caused by osteoarthritis include acupuncture, weight loss, anti-inflammatory supplements and physical therapy, according to Chen.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmh54gkkn00143b6nr9gtjdnc@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            But as always, you should contact your doctor or medical professional before pursuing any forms of treatment.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmh54gkkn00153b6nluh1aqwu@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            The study\u2019s findings were based on a systematic review and network meta-analysis that looked at 217 randomized controlled trials with over 15,000 participants from around the world.
