\u201cMahershala Ali<\/a> is still attached,\u201d Marvel Studios president Kevin Feige<\/a> confirmed at a press event on July 18 (via Variety)<\/a>, bringing some clarity to the long-awaited new \u201cBlade<\/a>\u201d entry in the MCU<\/a>.<\/p>\n

Just last month, while promoting \u201cJurassic World Rebirth,\u201d Ali was evasive<\/a> while discussing the project. \u201cLeave me out of it,\u201d Ali said when his \u201cJurassic World\u201d co-stars Scarlett Johansson and Jonathan Bailey attempted to prod<\/a> him on a Marvel-related trivia question. \u201cThat\u2019s a Scarlett question.\u201d In a separate interview with Variety at the \u201cRebirth\u201d premiere, he said. \u201cCall Marvel\u2026 I\u2019m ready. Let them know I\u2019m ready.\u201d<\/p>\n

Now, Feige says the project, originally set for release November 2025<\/a>, says that Marvel simply got weighed down with projects due to the \u201cover-expansion\u201d of the brand. With the increased demand for product, Feige explained, \u201cfor the very first time ever, quantity trumped quality.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cWe had spent 12 years working on the Infinity Saga, saying, \u2018That\u2019s never going to happen to us.\u2019 We always had more characters that people were asking about than we could possibly make, because we weren\u2019t going to make a movie a month \u2014 that\u2019s crazy. Suddenly there\u2019s a mandate to make more, and we go, \u2018Well, we do have more\u2019 \u2026 But maybe that\u2019s what we fell into,\u201d he lamented.<\/p>\n

Feige went on to explain that they didn\u2019t want to \u201cjust put a leather outfit on [Ali] and have him start killing vampires.\u201d Instead, Marvel Studios wanted something \u201cunique,\u201d and Feige added of the initial scripts, \u201cIt wasn\u2019t insanely great at the time.\u201d<\/p>\n

So, despite Ali\u2019s casting announcement in 2019<\/a> and his brief voice cameo<\/a> in 2021\u2019s \u201cEternals,\u201d the two-time Oscar-winning actor has yet to take on the role originated on film<\/a> by Wesley Snipes. <\/p>\n

\u201cWe didn\u2019t feel like, as we often do, you can have a good script and make it a great script through production. We didn\u2019t feel confident that we could do that on \u2018Blade,\u2019 and we didn\u2019t want to do that to Mahershala and didn\u2019t want to do that to us,\u201d Feige concluded.<\/p>\n

The most significant update regarding \u201cBlade\u201d this year actually made it seem like the project might be dead. Earlier this month, it was revealed that the movie \u201cSinners\u201d used period costumes <\/a>that were originally procured by costume designer Ruth Carter for \u201cBlade.\u201d Before he revealed the actual status of the production, Feige joked that this was the reason \u201cBlade\u201d was on hold.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe obstacle was, Ryan Coogler called and said, \u2018We\u2019d love some costumes for \u2018Sinners,’\u201d Feige joked. \u201cAnd we said, \u2018Take \u2019em man, no problem\u2019 \u2014 he\u2019s a good friend \u2014 \u2018take our costumes.
