Could Matchday 9 prove
\nto be a defining weekend in the Premier
\nLeague<\/a> title race when we look back in May? Arsenal certainly
\nmade the most of it, according to the Opta
\nsupercomputer.<\/p>\n

As far as weekends go, it was a pretty good one for Arsenal<\/a>.
\nMikel Arteta\u2019s side kept yet another clean sheet and earned three
\nmore points,
\nbeating a potentially awkward opponent in Crystal Palace 1-0 at the
\nEmirates<\/a>.<\/p>\n

That result may have been expected, but what happened elsewhere
\nin the division across Matchday 9 was slightly more
\neyebrow-raising.<\/p>\n

Both of Arsenal\u2019s direct title rivals slipped up.
\nLiverpool\u2019s torrid run continued with a 3-2 defeat away at
\nBrentford<\/a>, before
\nManchester City were beaten 1-0 at Aston Villa<\/a>.<\/p>\n

Those results leave Arsenal four points clear at the top of the
\ntable ahead of Bournemouth in second, with Tottenham and Sunderland
\n(both on 17 points) rounding out the top four.<\/p>\n

The Gunners now hold a six-point lead over City and a
\nseven-point cushion over Liverpool, the two sides who still remain
\ntheir most credible challengers, even with their early-season
\nhiccups.<\/p>\n

Unsurprisingly, those results led to a major swing in the Opta
\nsupercomputer\u2019s title probabilities. Before the weekend, Arsenal
\nwere already firm favourites at 53.8%, ahead of Manchester City
\n(18.5%) and Liverpool (17.4%).<\/p>\n

But with Arteta\u2019s side the only one of the three to claim any
\npoints, their title chances leapt up to 67.3%. City (12.4%) and
\nLiverpool (11.0%) both slipped further back, while Chelsea \u2013 down
\nfrom 4.5% to just 1.7% \u2013 were also downgraded in the model after
\nthey lost at home to Sunderland.<\/p>\n

Things are looking rosy for Arsenal, who are now in a strong
\nposition to win their first Premier League title in 21 years.<\/p>\n

Their defensive record continues to be extraordinary. Ahead of
\nthe Palace game,
\nwe noted they were on pace to break Chelsea\u2019s record of conceding
\njust 15 goals in a season<\/a>. Another clean sheet has only
\nincreased that likelihood, with Arsenal now on track to concede
\nonly 12.6 goals across the campaign.<\/p>\n

The league leaders have faced the fewest shots (72), the fewest
\nshots on target (19), the lowest xG (5.3) and conceded the fewest
\ngoals (3) in the Premier League this season.\u00a0It\u2019s the fewest
\ngoals they\u2019ve conceded after nine Premier League matches, and the
\nfirst time they\u2019ve kept six clean sheets in their opening nine
\ngames.<\/p>\n

What\u2019s more, in the current Premier League tactical cycle, where
\nset-pieces have become increasingly important, Arsenal remain kings
\nin that department.<\/p>\n

With Liverpool in crisis and City\u2019s form inconsistent,
\neverything seems to be aligning for Arteta.<\/p>\n

So, what can history tell us from here? Opta\u2019s supercomputer
\ntitle database only goes back to 2022-23, but looking back suggests
\nArsenal are in a strong position.<\/p>\n

Across the last three full seasons, only once has a team held a
\ntitle probability higher than 67% from this point and failed to win
\nthe league. That came in November 2024, when City \u2013 with 23 points
\nfrom nine games and one point ahead of Liverpool \u2013 were rated as
\n75.3% favourites, but ultimately fell short.<\/p>\n

On every other occasion a team\u2019s forecast has climbed above 67%
\n(which is what Arsenal\u2019s is now), they\u2019ve gone on to lift the
\ntrophy.<\/p>\n

Arteta, though, will not allow complacency to creep in. Not only
\nbecause City\u2019s implosion from 2024-25 serves as a warning, but also
\nbecause Arsenal have been here before and ended up empty-handed.
\nThis is the seventh time they\u2019ve taken 22 points or more from their
\nopening nine Premier League games of a season. Only once in the
\nprevious six occasions have they then gone on to win the title
\n(2003-04, when they had 23 points after nine games).<\/p>\n

They\u2019ve faltered from strong starts in recent memory, too. They
\nled after nine games in 2022-23 with 24 points and finished second,
\nwhile they were joint-top in 2023-24 with 21 points before again
\nfinishing as runners-up.<\/p>\n

But Arsenal appear better equipped this time. The squad is
\ndeeper and it says a lot that William Saliba\u2019s half-time withdrawal
\nagainst Palace has not been met with the outcry it would have
\nreceived a few years ago. The team is set up to absorb such
\nsetbacks.<\/p>\n

If they can maintain this level of control and consistency,
\nMatchday 9 may be the moment we look back on as the beginning of
\nthe end of Arsenal\u2019s long wait for another Premier League
\ntitle.<\/p>\n
