\n\tAmazon<\/a> is set to lay off tens of thousands of its corporate employees this week, marking the company\u2019s biggest staffing reduction since roughly 27,000 staffers were eliminated at the end of 2022.<\/p>\n

\n\tAs first reported by Reuters<\/a>, the Andy Jassy-led ecommerce giant will cut as many as 30,000 workers \u2014 nearly 10% of its corporate workforce \u2014 beginning as early as Tuesday. The layoffs come just before Amazon reports its latest quarterly earnings results on Thursday and are, according to Reuters\u2019 sources, part of efforts to \u201cpare expenses and compensate for overhiring during the peak demand of the pandemic.\u201d<\/p>\n

\n\tAs of the end of March, Amazon reported 1.56 million employees, up 3% from a year earlier. According to Reuters, the corporate staff count is approximately 350,000.<\/p>\n

\n\tRepresentatives for Amazon did not immediately respond to Variety\u2018s request for comment Monday.<\/p>\n

\n\tBack in June, Amazon\u00a0CEO Jassy\u00a0sent a memo to staff<\/a> that outlined how generative AI would soon \u201cmake our jobs even more exciting and fun than they are today\u201d but also cut the overall number of jobs at the company.<\/p>\n

\n\t\u201cAs we roll out more Generative AI and agents, it should change the way our work is done,\u201d the CEO said. \u201cWe will need fewer people doing some of the jobs that are being done today, and more people doing other types of jobs.
