She recommends the same format\u201412% incline at a pace of 3mph\u2014but for half the time.<\/p>\n<p>While the speed and incline remain the same, working for 15 minutes instead of 30 will put less pressure on your joints and make the workout more manageable.<\/p>\n<p>Make sure to warm up beforehand to prepare muscles and joints\u2014especially your calves and hamstrings\u2014for the session ahead. This <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.fitandwell.com\/exercise\/walking\/do-you-warm-up-before-a-walking-workout-heres-why-this-expert-recommends-it-and-his-go-to-three-move-warm-up\" data-before-rewrite-localise=\"https:\/\/www.fitandwell.com\/exercise\/walking\/do-you-warm-up-before-a-walking-workout-heres-why-this-expert-recommends-it-and-his-go-to-three-move-warm-up\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">walking warm-up<\/a> is quick and only consists of three moves.<\/p>\n<p><a id=\"elk-why-do-the-12-3-15-walking-workout\" href=\"\" data-url=\"\" target=\"_blank\" referrerpolicy=\"no-referrer-when-downgrade\" data-hl-processed=\"none\"\/>Why do the 12-3-15 walking workout<\/p>\n<p id=\"c8113edb-5211-4dcf-b792-89d8cbec35bd\">According to the expert, there are many reasons why this 15-minute, low-impact workout is so effective.<\/p>\n<p class=\"newsletter-form__strapline\">Start your week with achievable workout ideas, health tips and wellbeing advice in your inbox.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt minimizes stress on your joints while still enabling you to work up a sweat. The 12% incline creates a hill, raising your heart rate and helping you burn more calories, all the while strengthening your lower-body muscles.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Cubbins recommends this workout as a starting point for those returning to exercise after a break or who are new to exercise. Once you\u2019re comfortable with the incline and pace, you can progress it by gradually increasing the duration.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIf you don\u2019t have a treadmill, you can easily replicate the workout outside by walking at a steady pace for 15 minutes up a hill,\u201d says Cubbins. If you don\u2019t have any suitable inclines in the vicinity, try adjusting your pace instead with this <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.fitandwell.com\/exercise\/walking\/a-trainer-says-this-is-the-walking-workout-you-should-do-if-you-only-have-15-minutes-to-spare\" data-before-rewrite-localise=\"https:\/\/www.fitandwell.com\/exercise\/walking\/a-trainer-says-this-is-the-walking-workout-you-should-do-if-you-only-have-15-minutes-to-spare\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">15-minute walking workout<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe workout can also be replicated on a bike or stairmill\u2014just make sure to maintain a resistance level and pace that is moderately challenging, but doesn\u2019t leave you out of breath.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Walking workouts are overall a great way to improve your heart health, maintain a healthy weight and boost your mood, says Cubbins, but it should be complemented by resistance training.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhile walking is great exercise, I would always recommend incorporating some form of strength training into your routine.
