MEMPHIS, Tenn. \u2014 Since the government shutdown began in October, it\u2019s forced hundreds and thousands of federal workers to work without pay.<\/p>\n

\u201cI have, unfortunately been working for free, essentially for the last two weeks. Got a first paystub that had all zeros across the board,\u201d said the federal worker. <\/p>\n

A civilian federal worker who wants to remain anonymous told WREG he\u2019s had to dip into his retirement because he\u2019s ineligible for unemployment.<\/p>\n

He said he\u2019s worked for this federal government agency for nearly 20 years and has experienced shutdowns before, but he says this is the first time he\u2019s gone unpaid.<\/p>\n

\u201cIndividuals like myself that are mid-career, two young kids, things that have to get taken care of, that\u2019s my sole income. So, when you don\u2019t have that as an option, you know, it\u2019s tough,\u201d said the man. <\/p>\n

With no word on when the government shutdown will end, he says he\u2019s also concerned about when or if he\u2019ll receive back pay.<\/p>\n

Although he\u2019s been unpaid for weeks, he says he\u2019s optimistic about the situation because he\u2019s grateful that he still has a job.<\/p>\n

\u201cI love my organization. I love, you know, being a person that you know, assists and helps other folks, in basically selfless service, and I\u2019m passionate about that,\u201d said the man. <\/p>\n
