Both supercomputers will live at Oak Ridge National Laboratory (ORNL) in Oak Ridge, Tennessee. Lux is slated to come online fairly soon in early 2026, with Discovery following in 2029.<\/p>\n<p class=\"duet--article--dangerously-set-cms-markup duet--article--standard-paragraph _1ymtmqpi _17nnmdy1 _17nnmdy0 _1xwtict1\">Both build on the work that went into <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theverge.com\/2019\/5\/7\/18535078\/worlds-fastest-exascale-supercomputer-frontier-amd-cray-doe-oak-ridge-national-laboratory\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">the Frontier supercomputer<\/a>, which is also housed at ORNL and was the fastest in the world until <a href=\"https:\/\/asc.llnl.gov\/exascale\/el-capitan\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">El Capitan<\/a> came online last year at Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory. AMD also helped develop those supercomputers, so this isn\u2019t its first time working with the US government on a project like this.<\/p>\n<p class=\"duet--article--dangerously-set-cms-markup duet--article--standard-paragraph _1ymtmqpi _17nnmdy1 _17nnmdy0 _1xwtict1\">A <a href=\"https:\/\/www.amd.com\/en\/newsroom\/press-releases\/2025-10-27-amd-powers-u-s-sovereign-ai-factory-supercomputer.html\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">press release<\/a> announcing the partnership describes Lux as an \u201cAI Factory,\u201d stating:<\/p>\n<p class=\"duet--article--dangerously-set-cms-markup ewrhy38 _1xwtict1\">Lux at ORNL is the nation\u2019s first dedicated AI Factory for science, energy, and national security\u2014purpose-built to train, fine-tune, and deploy AI foundation models that will accelerate discovery and engineering innovation. Lux is designed to accelerate AI-driven science through its advanced architecture, optimized for data-intensive and model-centric workloads.<\/p>\n<p class=\"duet--article--dangerously-set-cms-markup duet--article--standard-paragraph _1ymtmqpi _17nnmdy1 _17nnmdy0 _1xwtict1\">Meanwhile, Discovery is described as having a \u201cBandwidth Everywhere\u201d design that improves on the performance and energy efficiency the Frontier supercomputer offers, delivering more computing output at a similar cost. That processing power will support scientific research in a variety of areas, as the press release explains:<\/p>\n<p class=\"duet--article--dangerously-set-cms-markup ewrhy38 _1xwtict1\">Discovery will drive breakthroughs in energy, biology, advanced materials, national security, and manufacturing innovation.
