KEWAUNEE COUNTY, Wis. (WBAY) – The Kewaunee County Sheriff\u2019s Office wants you to be aware of the increase in deer movement right now.<\/p>\n
The county\u2019s communications center says so far this year it\u2019s had 259 deer-related crashes. Last year at this time there were 184.<\/p>\n
This follows a similar, recent warning from the Wisconsin State Patrol.<\/p>\n
The sheriff\u2019s office says it\u2019s that time of year when deer are more actively moving between territories.<\/p>\n
AVOIDING DEER<\/p>\n
Deer are unpredictable. Remember to stay alert.<\/p>\n
Use your high beams when appropriate.<\/p>\n
Make sure you always buckle up.<\/p>\n
While watching the road, if you see one deer cross watch for more that could be following it.<\/p>\n
Honk your horn to get them to move.<\/p>\n
IF YOU HIT A DEER<\/p>\n
If you can\u2019t avoid hitting a deer, brake firmly to reduce speed. Don\u2019t swerve, because that can lead to losing control and a more serious crash.<\/p>\n
When reporting a deer-related crash, it\u2019s important to pull over to a safe location. Move your vehicle to the side of the road to avoid another crash as drivers approach you.<\/p>\n
Stay in your vehicle. Wait for law enforcement to get there. It\u2019s not safe to get out and approach an injured deer.<\/p>\n
You\u2019ll want to report the collision to police to get an official report, especially if damage exceeds $1,000.<\/p>\n
Call 911 if someone is hurt or if the deer or its remains are blocking traffic.<\/p>\n
