No one knows quite what to expect from Apple TV\u2019s Pluribus<\/a>, and that\u2019s exactly what series creator Vince Gilligan<\/a> wants. The psychological sci-fi thriller has had some curious marketing<\/a>, and even the proper trailer<\/a> raises questions about its plot. Is it about an apocalypse, an alien invasion, or a disease? All we know is that a virus of some sort has made the population supremely happy, with the exception of Carol Sturka (Rhea Seehorn<\/a>), the only person on Earth burdened with rage, sorrow, and confusion. Gilligan, who reunites with the actor three years after Better Call Saul\u2018s end<\/a>, claims he doesn\u2019t want viewers to know much more than that in advance of the premiere on November 7. But the Breaking Bad creator does admit that he\u2019s been thinking about Pluribus for almost a decade now and rewired the project so that Seehorn could star. The A.V. Club spoke to Gilligan about what drew him to this subject matter, sci-fi inspirations, and how audiences should prepare for Pluribus\u2018 twisted ride.\u00a0 \u00a0<\/p>\n

The A.V. Club: How long has this idea been with you? I ask because almost 20 years ago, you co-created a show called A.M.P.E.D. with Frank Spotnitz about an epidemic affecting the planet. What inspired you to stick with the larger concept, and how did it turn into Pluribus?\u00a0<\/p>\n

Vince Gilligan: Oh, yeah, that show with Frank. You\u2019re the first person to bring it up to me. We had created this pilot called A.M.P.E.D. in 2007, so way before COVID. It was about an epidemic that turned people into various things, so it was not like Pluribus per se. It was more of a cop show, and how a robbery homicide division dealt with it. It was like a Michael Mann show crossed with X-Files. That should\u2019ve been picked up. Anyway, with Pluribus, it\u2019s more about a hive mind. For this, I was thinking about a character about eight or nine years ago. I was thinking about a guy who, suddenly, the world is very nice to him, and they love him. He hasn\u2019t done anything particularly to deserve it, but they just love this guy. They will do anything for him, anything. I found that very intriguing. I pondered that for weeks and months and then decided, because at the same time I was working with Peter Gould on Better Call Saul, I thought, \u201cWow, we got so many good actors on this show. But I tell you that Rhea Seehorn, I\u2019d like to work with her again.\u201d I just had the same feeling with her that I did when I worked with Bryan Cranston on his particular episode of X-Files. I had thought to myself that I liked the cut of the guy. Similarly, I thought I could write this show for Rhea. And now I can\u2019t wait for the world to see how wonderful she is in Pluribus. Our whole crew feels that way about her. We got a lot of the same folks who worked on Better Call Saul in Albuquerque, so they\u2019ve known her for 10 years or more now, and they\u2019d crawl across broken glass for her.\u00a0<\/p>\n

AVC: What aspects of sci-fi did you want to bring to life here?\u00a0<\/p>\n

VG: I love science fiction. I just grew up watching and inhaling it as a little kid\u2014well into my teens and adulthood, too. I love all the old tropes. I love the wonderful, classic sci-fi stuff like Invasion Of The Body Snatchers and The Twilight Zone and all their twists. So I wanted to give a tip of the hat to those movies and TV shows, but I also wanted to subvert or turn them. And that\u2019s what we intended to do with Pluribus. We want people to think they know what\u2019s going to happen next\u2014and then, invariably, they\u2019re wrong.\u00a0<\/p>\n

AVC: Carol Sturka is single-handedly trying to fix this global problem. Loneliness is something your other leads, Walter White and Saul Goodman, go through as well. What about this feeling makes for good storytelling?\u00a0<\/p>\n

VG: I relate to people who feel like outsiders. I think we all do. I often say, \u201cOh, I\u2019m a lone wolf. I get what it\u2019s like to be an outsider.\u201d Hell, everybody does. Everybody feels like that. There might be billionaires out there who feel like underdogs because everybody loves underdogs, everybody loves Rocky Balboa. Human beings like to see themselves like that. Sometimes I walk into a restaurant, and I get this feeling that everybody knows each other, and I\u2019m the only one who\u2019s a stranger. That\u2019s a very human feeling. So I like a hero who is not fully equipped for the task. Carol Sturka wants to save the world, but it doesn\u2019t necessarily need to be done by her. She doesn\u2019t need the credit. She just assumes someone else will take the reins of this thing. She\u2019s not fully equipped to do it. In the show, it\u2019s not at all clear that she will be able to do it. It\u2019s not even necessarily clear that the world needs saving. Those are the kind of stories I like, where the audience can say, \u201cYou know, I don\u2019t know if she\u2019s even doing the right thing. I know her heart\u2019s in the right place, but is she even doing the right thing?\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n

AVC: Is there any narrative reason you chose romance author as Carol\u2019s profession?\u00a0<\/p>\n

VG: I just liked the idea of a writer trying to save the world a lot. I was thinking about different professions, like what if she were a florist or something instead? When you think of someone who saves the world, you\u2019d want a Liam Neeson or a Tom Cruise. You don\u2019t want a writer. That\u2019s about the last person in the world you want tasked with saving humanity because we\u2019re all a bunch of inept idiots. Okay, we\u2019re not all idiots, but if you spend your whole life doing that, it means you don\u2019t want to be in charge of something of this scale. And then I started thinking about what kind of writer Carol should be. I can say from 30-plus years of experience that screenwriters are boring. And romance authors just seem more colorful, fun, and interesting.\u00a0<\/p>\n<\/p>\n

AVC: Did you choose to direct the two-part premiere to establish the show\u2019s specific visual language?\u00a0<\/p>\n

VG: I just direct because I love it. I\u2019m greedy. It\u2019s so much more fun than writing. Writing is probably more crucial and integral to what it is I do, but it\u2019s not as much fun. I love directing and being able to say, \u201cI want to do this big thing or set piece.\u201d I put out my hand, and someone puts a hot dog in there. I can say there\u2019s not enough mustard, and then I go away, and then the crew makes magic happen. When you\u2019re a director, I\u2019m realizing now, it\u2019s not unlike Carol being treated so solicitously by the others. You get hooked on it. You\u2019re like, \u201cOh man, I\u2019m looking around and I\u2019m turning in a circle, and 300 people are standing around and me.\u201d You get over the fear of that and realize they\u2019re all there to help you and to bring your vision to life. At the beginning, it\u2019s just raw fear though. Maybe I\u2019m like dime-store Sigmund Freud here, and maybe that\u2019s part of where this idea came from for Pluribus. I wish I could\u2019ve directed more, but I needed to be in the writers\u2019 room and look at the producing aspect of the show as well.\u00a0<\/p>\n

AVC: How does setting the show in Albuquerque, where Breaking Bad and Better Call Saul also took place, affect the dystopic part of the story? Everything certainly looks deserted and vast.\u00a0<\/p>\n

VG: The truth and the wonderful thing about Albuquerque is that I love the crew we worked with before. So shooting there is worth the strain and the fear of people wondering if it\u2019s set there because of Breaking Bad and Better Call Saul and that there must be a connection<\/a>. No, not really. It probably would have behooved us structurally to set the show somewhere else. But I didn\u2019t want to be putting Pennsylvania license plates on all the cars in Albuquerque. I just figured we should rip the Band-Aid off and shoot on location.\u00a0<\/p>\n

AVC: Since there\u2019s limited information about the show and we can\u2019t reveal any spoilers, how do you want to set audience\u2019s expectations for Pluribus?\u00a0<\/p>\n

VG: I almost don\u2019t want the audience to expect anything. I just want them to be along for the ride and wonder, \u201cOh, which way is the roller coaster going now?\u201d My heart\u2019s desire is not to prepare them at all. The tagline that I used when I pitched to Apple was something like \u201cThe most miserable person on Earth tries to save the world from happiness.\u201d But some of my favorite experiences ever of watching movies and TV shows were when I went into them cold. I knew nothing about them. And that was such a good experience. What I not so secretly hope for potential viewers of Pluribus is to relax and say, \u201cAll right, the guy didn\u2019t want to talk about it much, so I\u2019m not going to go seek out information on it. Tell me when it airs. Tell me when I can watch it on streaming and when it hits Apple TV.\u201d I want people to just [read this] and say, \u201cAll right, I\u2019m going to follow his suggestion here and just watch it.\u201d That\u2019s how I like watching things, when I don\u2019t know much about them.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n
