{"id":257579,"date":"2025-10-29T00:00:07","date_gmt":"2025-10-29T00:00:07","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us\/257579\/"},"modified":"2025-10-29T00:00:07","modified_gmt":"2025-10-29T00:00:07","slug":"the-crown-in-birmingham-experiences-guerrilla-ozzy-bat-protest","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us\/257579\/","title":{"rendered":"The Crown in Birmingham experiences guerrilla Ozzy bat protest"},"content":{"rendered":"<p id=\"a0c10ddb-5ad4-4d08-8ebe-8dee75847373\">In what appears to be a swift burst of unscheduled guerrilla activity, the pub where <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.loudersound.com\/features\/black-sabbath-albums-ranked\" data-before-rewrite-localise=\"https:\/\/www.loudersound.com\/features\/black-sabbath-albums-ranked\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Black Sabbath<\/a> played their first-ever live show has been embellished by a mysterious fan seeking to draw attention to the building&#8217;s iconic status.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;I\u2019ve just finished work and saw a man drilling into The Crown near Birmingham New Street,&#8221; passer-by Freddie Cartwright tells Louder. &#8220;He put up what looked like a bronze or brass bat and a plaque. It was quite a dramatic scene, and he&#8217;s left now. The police robot alarm is still ringing.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p><a id=\"elk-seasonal\" href=\"\" data-url=\"\" target=\"_blank\" referrerpolicy=\"no-referrer-when-downgrade\" data-hl-processed=\"none\"\/><\/p>\n<p id=\"a0c10ddb-5ad4-4d08-8ebe-8dee75847373-2\">The plaque identifies The Crown as being the birthplace of <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.loudersound.com\/tag\/hevay-metal\" data-auto-tag-linker=\"true\" data-before-rewrite-localise=\"https:\/\/www.loudersound.com\/tag\/hevay-metal\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">heavy metal<\/a>, ahead of the inscription, &#8220;Preserve the music. Preserve the moments. Preserve the madness. This place should be a museum.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>You may like<\/p>\n<p>The Crown played host to the fledgling Black Sabbath in 1968, and went on to book <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.loudersound.com\/music\/albums\/the-who-albums-ranked\" data-before-rewrite-localise=\"https:\/\/www.loudersound.com\/music\/albums\/the-who-albums-ranked\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">The Who<\/a>, <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.loudersound.com\/features\/status-quo-best-albums\" data-before-rewrite-localise=\"https:\/\/www.loudersound.com\/features\/status-quo-best-albums\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Status Quo<\/a>, <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.loudersound.com\/features\/thin-lizzy-best-albums\" data-before-rewrite-localise=\"https:\/\/www.loudersound.com\/features\/thin-lizzy-best-albums\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Thin Lizzy<\/a>, Marc Bolan, Supertramp, Judas Priest and many more. By 2014, the building had fallen into disrepair, but it was given Grade II listed status last year to provide it with protection from development.<\/p>\n<p>Historic England, the public body that advocates for historic sites, say The Crown deserves listed status &#8220;for its importance in the 1960s folk music revival, and in the late 1960s as the venue where Black Sabbath created their sound which shaped a new internationally popular genre of music; heavy metal.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>The late <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.loudersound.com\/music\/albums\/every-ozzy-osbourne-solo-album-ranked\" data-before-rewrite-localise=\"https:\/\/www.loudersound.com\/music\/albums\/every-ozzy-osbourne-solo-album-ranked\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Ozzy Osbourne<\/a> \u2013 whose funeral procession passed the pub in July \u2013 talked about the possibility of The Crown being demolished in a 2024 interview, telling fans, &#8220;If you want to save something, you&#8217;ve got to get off your butt and protest.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Meanwhile, a petition to officially designate The Crown and several other local buildings as civic assets has attracted over 26,000 signatures.<\/p>\n<p class=\"newsletter-form__strapline\">Sign up below to get the latest from Classic Rock, plus exclusive special offers, direct to your inbox!<\/p>\n<p>Earlier this year, The Crown&#8217;s owners, Tokyo Inns, submitted plans to extend the pub&#8217;s car park, but the submission was rejected by Birmingham City Council, a decision welcomed by campaigners.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Time for Toyoko Inns to put forward proper refurbishment plans for The Crown as a pub and music venue right now or sell up,&#8221; the Save Station Street campaign said. &#8220;For what it&#8217;s worth, we don&#8217;t ultimately care who owns the site if it is run with integrity, for Brummies, and with respect to its legacy as one of the UK&#8217;s most progressive and historic venues.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>The campaign is also fighting plans by developers to build a 50-story tower on the site of The Electric Cinema, the UK\u2019s oldest working cinema, which was closed in early 2024.
