(AAP: Bianca De Marchi)

Yes, school holidays were a seasonal factor pushing that up, but struggling households don’t generally spend big taking their kids away, while those empty nesters without kids (here’s looking at you Boomers) pushed up international travel costs with their European summer pilgrimages.

Driving the 3.2 per cent annual rate of inflation was a 3.3 per cent rise in the cost of eating out, another sign that enough households have enough money to spare to allow businesses to push up prices.

Global leader ‘perplexed’ by sanguine markets

The Reserve Bank governor tells a gathering in Sydney she is not yet concerned about the level of unemployment in Australia.

Services inflation more broadly remained “sticky”, edging up from 3.3 per cent to 3.5 per cent.

The RBA is worried about this because it is a proxy for domestic price pressures.

Aside from meals out and holidays, the biggest annual drivers in this category were things we can’t avoid, namely rents and medical services.

Even goods inflation, usually kept low by cheap imports of electronics and household goods, was up to 3 per cent — although most of this was surging power prices.

Markets still bet on one more rate cut

In short, there is nothing in this data that suggests a widespread lack of demand in the economy, and plenty to suggest that many businesses are still struggling to meet it.

It looks as though most businesses have been able to pass on at least a large part of those rising power prices and any wage increases, and there’s still enough customers willing and able to pay.

That does not suggest an economy in urgent need of more stimulus.

The financial markets broadly agree with this analysis.

Michele Bullock has said a 0.9 per cent quarterly core inflation figure would be a “material miss”. (AAP: Mick Tsikas)

From as much as an 80 per cent chance of a November rate cut after the shock jobs numbers a couple of weeks ago, market pricing now suggests less than a 10 per cent chance.

That is merely technical. The practical odds of a November rate cut are zero, unless Donald Trump and Xi Jinping decide to blow up global markets by ramping up their trade dispute at tomorrow’s meeting in South Korea, rather than de-escalating.

The market odds of a December rate cut are down to about 20 per cent, but that also seems far too generous barring a black swan financial event.

Indeed, the markets have just one more rate cut priced in, and that’s not expected until May next year, which would be after another six months of inflation data.

RBA should rein in property prices

Whether or not we’re delivered a rate cut next Tuesday, there’s a solid argument that the RBA should once again consider using its powers to curb runaway real estate prices.

There’s a real risk that cut won’t eventuate if inflation doesn’t suddenly reverse. In fact, there’s a growing risk the next move could be up, albeit probably not for quite some time if that were to happen.

The latest jobs numbers, if the jump in unemployment is confirmed in forthcoming releases, will present the RBA with another headache some of its overseas counterparts are already confronting.

The Reserve has been proud of the fact that it has held on to most of the post-COVID jobs gains while getting inflation back under control.

What will it do if inflation has once more become unshackled at the same time as those job gains completely evaporate and the unemployment rate starts with a 5 again?

Will the term stagflation start hitting the headlines here, as it has been in the US? The combination of a stalling economy, rising joblessness and stubbornly high inflation is a central banker’s nightmare.

Over to you, Michele Bullock.

A November rate cut is, to borrow a phrase, dead, buried and cremated.
