SEATTLE \u2014 It’s official — the Seattle Storm have hired New York Liberty assistant coach Sonia Raman as their new head coach, the team announced Wednesday.<\/p>\n

The Storm fired head coach Noelle Quinn in late September<\/a>, three days after losing to the eventual champion Las Vegas Aces in the opening round of the WNBA playoffs.<\/p>\n

Raman spent 2020-24 as an assistant coach with the Memphis Grizzlies, where she focused on player development, scouting, and analytics. She spent last season with the New York Liberty.<\/p>\n

\u201cSonia is a trailblazer, an innovator and a leader in basketball analytics and strategy,\u201d said Storm General Manager Talisa Rhea. \u201cHer diverse coaching experiences and deep focus on player development and connection make her an exceptional coach to lead our team into the next era. We look forward to her leadership as we pursue another WNBA championship.\u201d <\/p>\n

According to ESPN<\/a>, “Raman makes WNBA history as the first person of Indian descent to be head coach after being the first Indian American woman to be an NBA assistant.”<\/p>\n

Before working in the NBA, she led the MIT women\u2019s basketball program for more than 10 years, when she earned several coach of the year awards.<\/p>\n
