{"id":259181,"date":"2025-10-29T18:13:10","date_gmt":"2025-10-29T18:13:10","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us\/259181\/"},"modified":"2025-10-29T18:13:10","modified_gmt":"2025-10-29T18:13:10","slug":"studio-gang-completes-mass-timber-rubenstein-treehouse-at-harvard","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us\/259181\/","title":{"rendered":"Studio Gang completes mass-timber Rubenstein Treehouse at Harvard"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>An exposed <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dezeen.com\/tag\/mass-timber\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">mass-timber<\/a> structure designed to resemble a tree gives a &#8220;distinct architectural identity&#8221; to this Harvard University student centre, designed by American architecture firm <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dezeen.com\/tag\/studio-gang\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Studio Gang<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Rubenstein Treehouse is a social hub at\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.harvard.edu\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Harvard<\/a>&#8216;s Allston <a href=\"https:\/\/seas.harvard.edu\/about-us\/visit-us\/allston\/enterprise-research-campus\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Enterprise Research Campus<\/a>, which sits across the Charles River from the university&#8217;s main facilities in Cambridge, outside Boston.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/studiogang.com\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Studio Gang<\/a> designed the two-storey structure with a central core made of a low-carbon concrete mix, combined with branching mass-timber ceiling supports and columns on the exterior.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-2263334 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/10\/studio-gang-rubenstein-treehouse-harvard_dezeen_2364_col_0-852x553.jpg\" alt=\"Wooden academic center by Studio Gang at Harvard\" width=\"2364\" height=\"1534\"  \/>Studio Gang has completed Rubenstein Treehouse at Harvard<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;The building&#8217;s exposed mass-timber structure creates its distinct architectural identity and reinforces it as a destination for innovation,&#8221; said the studio.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;On the facade, canted timber columns branch outward like a tree to support a cantilevered upper floor.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Rubenstein Treehouse&#8217;s wood-clad facade is &#8220;strategically inflected&#8221;, creating a faceted appearance. Bird-friendly glass windows are shaped in a way that aligns with the exterior angles.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-2263335 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/10\/studio-gang-rubenstein-treehouse-harvard_dezeen_2364_col_1-852x787.jpg\" alt=\"Tree-like support beams in mass-timber interior\" width=\"2364\" height=\"2185\"  \/>It has a mass-timber structure based on the form of trees<\/p>\n<p>The 55,000-square-foot (5,109-square-metre) building is framed by ground-level outdoor spaces used for circulation and to embed the building within the surrounding campus, where buildings by <a href=\"https:\/\/www.mvrdv.com\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">MVRDV<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/henninglarsen.com\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Henning Larsen<\/a>\u00a0and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.marlonblackwell.com\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Marlon Blackwell Architects<\/a> are also underway.<\/p>\n<p>Lawns with trees and bioswales have been designed by landscape architecture studio <a href=\"https:\/\/www.scapestudio.com\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Scape<\/a> to capture rainwater for reuse in the building.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-2263336 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/10\/studio-gang-rubenstein-treehouse-harvard_dezeen_2364_col_2-852x1136.jpg\" alt=\"Concrete cores in atrium of Rubenstein Treehouse\" width=\"1773\" height=\"2364\"  \/>Two massive concrete cores rise through an atrium<\/p>\n<p>Three entrances allow access to the Rubenstein Treehouse, with the primary entrance on the north side, bringing visitors into a double-height lobby and triple-height atrium around the massive concrete cores. Skylights at the top of the atrium filter in light through the levels.<\/p>\n<p>Inside, timber is used throughout \u2013 including on the elevated walkways that usher visitors over the lobby and the massive tree-like columns that hold up the timber ceiling with its prominent glued-laminated (glulam) timber rafters.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-2263337 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/10\/studio-gang-rubenstein-treehouse-harvard_dezeen_2364_col_3-852x1136.jpg\" alt=\"Elevated walkways at Rubenstein Treehouse\" width=\"1773\" height=\"2364\"  \/>Rubenstein Treehouse holds meeting spaces and amenities<\/p>\n<p>Studio Gang founder Jeanne Gang, who holds the position of Kajima Professor in Practice of Architecture at the Harvard Graduate School of Design, said that the use of wood signals the Ivy League university&#8217;s commitment to sustainable architecture.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;The Rubenstein Treehouse is a building that opens itself up, welcomes all people, and serves as a visual and programmatic anchor to the ERC,&#8221; said Gang. &#8220;Its exposed mass timber structure demonstrates Harvard&#8217;s commitment to a more sustainable future.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-2263341 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/10\/studio-gang-rubenstein-treehouse-harvard_dezeen_2364_col_7-852x612.jpg\" alt=\"Mass-timber beams at Rubenstein Treehouse\" width=\"2364\" height=\"1699\"  \/>It features angled facades<\/p>\n<p>The ground floor features amenities spaces such as a cafe and administration zone, alongside a logistics area with a large loading dock that services the event spaces above.<\/p>\n<p>\t\t\t\t<a href=\"https:\/\/www.dezeen.com\/2025\/10\/09\/anthony-timberlands-center-grafton-architects\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\"><br \/>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<img loading=\"lazy\" width=\"191\" height=\"191\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/10\/sq-anthony-timberlands-center-grafton-architects-mass-timber-university-arkansas_dezeen_2364_col_3-1.jpeg\" class=\"excludeLightbox wp-post-image\" alt=\"Anthony Timberlands Center for Design and Materials Innovation by Grafton Architects\" decoding=\"async\" data-pin-nopin=\"true\"  \/><\/p>\n<p> Grafton Architects completes first mass-timber building for University of Arkansas\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/p>\n<p>\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/a><\/p>\n<p>On the first storey, several meeting rooms of various sizes are pushed to the edge of the plan. On the second storey, there are larger meeting spaces, including Canopy Hall, which is the largest in the building.<\/p>\n<p>An outdoor terrace runs along a loggia on the south side of this uppermost floor.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-2263342 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/10\/studio-gang-rubenstein-treehouse-harvard_dezeen_2364_col_8-852x568.jpg\" alt=\"Forest carpet at Rubenstein Treehouse\" width=\"2364\" height=\"1575\"  \/>Textiles with forest themes feature throughout<\/p>\n<p>According to the studio, &#8220;forest-inspired textiles&#8221; are used throughout, such as in the carpeting of some of the meeting rooms, which resembles camouflage.<\/p>\n<p>To reduce Rubenstein Treehouse&#8217;s energy needs, the whole building is electric, relying on photovoltaics and the grid. A daylight harvesting system minimises the need for electric lighting,<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-2263340 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/10\/studio-gang-rubenstein-treehouse-harvard_dezeen_2364_col_6-852x825.jpg\" alt=\"Terrace at Rubenstein treehouse\" width=\"2364\" height=\"2289\"  \/>Rubenstein Treehouse&#8217;s uppermost floor has a terrace<\/p>\n<p>Rubenstein Treehouse is not the first structure where Studio Gang has used direct figurative references to natural elements to highlight the claimed operational sustainability of a structure.
