\n\tColin Farrell<\/a> recalled \u201cone of the worst days I\u2019ve ever had on a film set\u201d during a visit to The Late Show With Stephen Colbert on Tuesday.<\/p>\n

\n\tThe Irish actor, who\u2019s currently starring in the Netflix film Ballad of a Small Player, described a disastrous scene while shooting his big breakthrough Hollywood role in Steven Spielberg\u2019s 2002 sci-fi classic Minority Report<\/a>. In the film, Farrell played a Justice Department agent investigating Tom Cruise<\/a>\u2019s character for a crime. <\/p>\n

\n\t\u201cI grew up watching them lads, I grew up watching Tom Cruise and Top Gun and Risky Business, and Steven Spielberg and [composer] John Williams kind of raised me in their films,\u201d he began. \u201cBut it was my birthday on May 31. We were shooting. I begged production of a $120 million film if they would not have me working on my birthday. Who did I think I was?<\/p>\n

\n\t\u201cSo my pickup [to go to set] was at 6 a.m. and I got up to all sorts of nonsense the night before,\u201d he continued. \u201cI remember getting into bed, and as soon as I turned off the light, the phone rang, and it was the driver outside saying, \u2018It\u2019s 10 past 6\u2019 and I went, \u2018Oh shit.\u2019<\/p>\n

\n\t\u201cI got to the trailer, and Dave Venghaus \u2014 the [second] AD, God bless him \u2014 went, \u2018You can\u2019t go to the set like this.\u2019 I went: Just get me, get me six Pacifico Cervezas and a pack of 20 Marlboro Reds.\u201d<\/p>\n

\n\tAt this point in the story, Farrell noted that this tale takes place a couple of years before he went to rehab and got sober. \u201cAll the holy people who we look to for the answers on how to live a life would say, \u2018The present is all that counts,’\u201d he joked.<\/p>\n

\n\t\u201cI had a couple of beers and I went to the set,\u201d he continued. \u201cBut it was terrible. I will never forget the line that I had, but I couldn\u2019t get it out. It was: \u2018I\u2019m sure you\u2019ve all grasped the fundamental paradox of pre-crime methodology.\u2019 That was the line that started the scene. I remember one of them coming up and saying, \u2018Do you want to go and take a breath of fresh air?\u2019 And I remember thinking: \u2018If I go out and take a breath of fresh air, then I\u2019ll be under more pressure when I come back in.’\u201d<\/p>\n

\n\tThen Farrell revealed: \u201cIt took 46 takes. Tom wasn\u2019t very happy with me. Tom was not happy with me.\u201d<\/p>\n

\n\tCruise, of course, famously demands perfection from himself, and also holds those around him to a high standard. His Top Gun: Maverick co-star Jennifer Connelly told Extra TV<\/a>, \u201cI\u2019ve never been more paranoid about knowing my lines,\u201d adding that Cruise runs a \u201ctight ship\u201d because \u201che\u2019s so prepared. All the time.\u201d<\/p>\n
