Audubon Zoo is “roaring” with excitement after welcoming three African lion cubs \u2014 the first time in the zoo\u2019s history that a litter of three has all survived.<\/p>\n

The cubs were born on Oct. 19 to parents Kali and Arnold, their second litter together. Their first, born in 2020, included two male cubs who have since moved to other accredited zoos to start their own prides. Before Kali and Arnold\u2019s first litter, Audubon hadn\u2019t seen a lion birth since 1984, when the zoo was home to Asiatic lions.<\/p>\n

At birth, lion cubs weigh just 2.5 to 5 pounds and are born blind.\u00a0<\/p>\n

Zoo staff are now making sure the cubs receive proper care and vaccinations before they\u2019re ready to meet the public. Kali and her cubs will remain behind the scenes for about 12 weeks to allow time for bonding, vaccinations, and a gradual introduction to the rest of the pride.<\/p>\n
