Blue-Chip Galleries Drop Out of Art Basel Miami Beach:\u00a0At least eight exhibitors\u2014including Alison\u00a0Jacques, Miguel Abreu, and Lia Rumma\u2014have dropped from the list of participants since the fair announced it in July, as\u00a0ARTnews\u00a0reported<\/a>\u00a0earlier this week.<\/p>\n

Karim Crippa Takes the Helm at Art Basel Paris:\u00a0Having previously served as the fair\u2019s director of communications, he will now\u00a0lead the French edition.<\/a>\u00a0The fair\u2019s previous director, Clement Del\u00e9pine, recently departed to lead the Lafayette Anticipations art space.<\/p>\n

Uffner & Liu Now Represents Reginald Madison:\u00a0The self-taught painter and sculptor emerged from the Black Arts Movement in Chicago during the 1960s and \u201970s. After years of working in relative obscurity, he has recently had shows at September Gallery in Hudson\u00a0and Rachel Uffner Gallery in New York.<\/p>\n

Paul Soto Gallery Announces Representation\u00a0of John Sandroni:\u00a0His work is currently\u00a0on\u00a0view at the gallery, which is based in New York.<\/p>\n

KSS Architects Completes Learning and Engagement Center at Newark Museum of Art:\u00a0The firm has signed off\u00a0on\u00a0the New Jersey institution\u2019s new center, which is part of a wider development including a new green space, a new progressive gallery, an outdoor sculpture garden, and Museum Parc.<\/p>\n

\t\tThe Big Number: $107.4 M.\t<\/p>\n

\n\tThat was the total amount raked in by Christie\u2019s four auctions held at the same time as Art Basel Paris last week.\u00a0The top lot was Yves Klein\u2019s\u00a0California (1KB 71),\u00a0which went for $21.3 million, setting an auction\u00a0record for the artist in France.<\/p>\n

\n\tMelanie Gerlis writes in the\u00a0Financial Times\u00a0that in the wake of Frieze and Art Basel Paris doubleheader earlier this month, the art market\u00a0appears to be regaining momentum\u00a0<\/a>after its drawn-out downturn. (This, despite collectors adopting a \u201csafety-first\u201d attitude.) Collectors are showing a preference for works with art-historical grounding and institutional validation\u00a0over speculation, Gerlis notes. That has dealers hopeful, buoyed by some decent auction\u00a0results at Christie\u2019s and Sotheby\u2019s in London\u00a0and Paris over the last couple of weeks. The general attitude, as Gerlis describes it? Cautious, historically minded, and somewhat optimistic.
