He went on to direct \u201cStar Trek\u201d movies and campaign against nuclear arms but Meyer<\/a> made his first splash back in the \u201870s as the author of \u201cThe Seven-Per-Cent Solution,\u201d a witty mystery that resurrected Sir Arthur Conan Doyle\u2019s famous sleuth, Sherlock Holmes, and dove him into a kidnapping case that involved his own cocaine addiction and a meeting with Sigmund Freud. \u201cThe Real Thing\u201d refers to art masterworks that may not be authentic, but don\u2019t worry. A Truce That Is Not Peace, Miriam Toews<\/p>\n

All of Toews\u2019 eight novels contain autobiographical elements. She is best known for \u201cWomen Talking,\u201d which became an Academy Award-winning movie and which draws on her youth in a restrictive religious community, but Toews also has written about her sister\u2019s death by suicide and her troubled father. Many of those elements come together in \u201cTruce,\u201d a memoir in which the Canadian grapples with why she keeps returning to her sister\u2019s story, how reliable her memory is and whether she should be writing about this stuff in the first place. All of Toews\u2019 books are outstanding but if you have not read her, this could be a great place to start. Out Aug. 26.<\/p>\n

The Minneapolis native\u2019s novel is a coming-of-age book that might also be a coming-of-cannibal book. Vietnamese American Ronny is already freaked out about her older brother leaving home and having to start high school. But things really get hinky when a boy attacks her, unleashing violent feelings and behaviors she didn\u2019t know were a part of her.
