To explore what the movement gets right \u2014 and wrong \u2014 about retirement, GOBankingRates turned to several <a href=\"https:\/\/gobankingrates.com\/top-100-money-experts\/?hyperlink_type=manual&amp;utm_term=incontent_link_4&amp;utm_campaign=1318280&amp;utm_source=yahoo.com&amp;utm_content=6&amp;utm_medium=rss\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" data-ylk=\"slk:financial experts;elm:context_link;itc:0;sec:content-canvas\" class=\"link \">financial experts<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p class=\"yf-1090901\">According to Stephan Shipe, a certified financial planner and founder and CEO of <a href=\"https:\/\/scholarfinancialadvising.com\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" data-ylk=\"slk:Scholar Advising;elm:context_link;itc:0;sec:content-canvas\" class=\"link \">Scholar Advising<\/a>, the FIRE movement gets a lot right \u2014 starting with the fact that it encourages you to save with purpose.<\/p>\n<p class=\"yf-1090901\">\u201cIt pushes people to think carefully about what they value and to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.gobankingrates.com\/saving-money\/savings-advice\/things-to-do-right-now-to-save-money\/?hyperlink_type=manual&amp;utm_term=incontent_link_5&amp;utm_campaign=1318280&amp;utm_source=yahoo.com&amp;utm_content=7&amp;utm_medium=rss\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" data-ylk=\"slk:save with purpose;elm:context_link;itc:0;sec:content-canvas\" class=\"link \">save with purpose<\/a>,\u201d he said. \u201cThe discipline and awareness around spending are good habits no matter when you retire.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"yf-1090901\">Michael LaCivita, a certified financial planner with <a href=\"https:\/\/www.domainmoney.com\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" data-ylk=\"slk:Domain Money;elm:context_link;itc:0;sec:content-canvas\" class=\"link \">Domain Money<\/a>, agrees that FIRE\u2019s emphasis on budgeting discipline, expense analysis and long-term planning is essential to achieving any financial goal \u2014 especially one as significant as retirement.<\/p>\n<p class=\"yf-1090901\">He\u2019s also a big fan of how FIRE encourages wealth-building behaviors that guard against \u201clifestyle creep\u201d as your wages increase over time.<\/p>\n<p class=\"yf-1090901\">\u201cFor lifestyle creep, the more you make, the more you\u2019re likely to spend if you don\u2019t follow a budget,\u201d he said. \u201cEach raise you receive ends up going to more luxuries or fun money rather than increasing your savings. One of his favorite aspects of the movement is how it encourages people to explore financial literacy for themselves.<\/p>\n<p class=\"yf-1090901\">\u201cI would say one of the biggest benefits of the FIRE movement has been the increase in <a href=\"https:\/\/www.gobankingrates.com\/money\/wealth\/how-financial-literacy-can-help-avoid-mistakes-build-wealth\/?hyperlink_type=manual&amp;utm_term=incontent_link_7&amp;utm_campaign=1318280&amp;utm_source=yahoo.com&amp;utm_content=10&amp;utm_medium=rss\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" data-ylk=\"slk:financial literacy;elm:context_link;itc:0;sec:content-canvas\" class=\"link \">financial literacy<\/a> as people explore the concept and apply some of the best practices, including savings, to their finances,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p> Story Continues  <\/p>\n<p class=\"yf-1090901\">While there are obvious perks for those who have the singular goal of retiring early, End adds that applying some of FIRE\u2019s principles can benefit anyone, helping them plan, budget and invest more wisely throughout their lives.<\/p>\n<p class=\"yf-1090901\">\u201cI\u2019ve seen clients who started down the FIRE path and, even after moderating their approach, maintained the financial awareness and decision-making skills they developed,\u201d he said. \u201cThat\u2019s incredibly valuable.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"yf-1090901\">End says the biggest downside he sees in adopting the FIRE mentality is that \u201clife is short, and health is not guaranteed.\u201d He\u2019s worked with clients who spent their 20s and 30s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.gobankingrates.com\/saving-money\/savings-advice\/living-frugally-make-you-feel-wealthy\/?hyperlink_type=manual&amp;utm_term=incontent_link_8&amp;utm_campaign=1318280&amp;utm_source=yahoo.com&amp;utm_content=11&amp;utm_medium=rss\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" data-ylk=\"slk:embracing intense frugality;elm:context_link;itc:0;sec:content-canvas\" class=\"link \">embracing intense frugality<\/a>, only to face health challenges or family situations that made them wish they\u2019d taken more pleasure in those early years.<\/p>\n<p class=\"yf-1090901\">\u201cFinding balance is far more sustainable than grinding yourself down for early retirement,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"yf-1090901\">Just because FIRE encourages a hard line on frugality doesn\u2019t mean adherents aren\u2019t vulnerable to underestimating their retirement expenses \u2014 and End is particularly concerned about followers <a href=\"https:\/\/www.gobankingrates.com\/retirement\/planning\/im-a-financial-advisor-number-one-factor-retirement-clients-overlook\/?hyperlink_type=manual&amp;utm_term=incontent_link_9&amp;utm_campaign=1318280&amp;utm_source=yahoo.com&amp;utm_content=12&amp;utm_medium=rss\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" data-ylk=\"slk:underestimating healthcare costs;elm:context_link;itc:0;sec:content-canvas\" class=\"link \">underestimating healthcare costs<\/a> before Medicare eligibility at age 65.<\/p>\n<p class=\"yf-1090901\">If you retire at 50, that could be more than a decade of out-of-pocket healthcare costs, which can derail even the best-laid plans.<\/p>\n<p class=\"yf-1090901\">Life can also change in other, more felicitous ways that FIRE doesn\u2019t always fully account for.<\/p>\n<p class=\"yf-1090901\">\u201cThe biggest life change that we typically see is with people who started down the FIRE path and ultimately decided to have children,\u201d End said. \u201cWith that decision, they have to shift priorities \u2014 and their finances follow suit.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"yf-1090901\">To LaCivita, one of the biggest misfires of the FIRE movement is how it can create tunnel vision \u2014 encouraging people to orient their entire lives around maximizing income and minimizing expenses, leaving them feeling aimless once they\u2019ve reached their goal. His blunt assessment: \u201cYou have to build a life beyond the spreadsheet.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"yf-1090901\">Like End, he worries that clients who lean too far into the FIRE approach can miss out on unique experiences and time with loved ones for the sake of saving money. He\u2019s also concerned that, in the singular fixation on saving for retirement, people fail to plan for what they actually want to do once they retire.<\/p>\n<p class=\"yf-1090901\">\u201cIn my experience, most retirees have not thought about what they will do with their time when work is not part of their routine,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"yf-1090901\">Recognizing that FIRE has both powerful strengths and notable weaknesses, these experts encourage a more balanced approach to retirement planning \u2014 one that prioritizes smart saving and investing while also allowing for greater flexibility.<\/p>\n<p class=\"yf-1090901\">Shipe encourages clients to start \u201ctest-driving\u201d aspects of retirement early, such as scaling back hours or taking extended time off to see how it feels emotionally and financially.<\/p>\n<p class=\"yf-1090901\">LaCivita tells his clients that they don\u2019t have to leave the workforce entirely to be successful with FIRE. Instead, they can recalibrate the principles to achieve other goals, like reducing hours or workload to spend more time with family.<\/p>\n<p class=\"yf-1090901\">\u201cThe principles of the FIRE movement \u2014 living below your means, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.gobankingrates.com\/investing\/strategy\/warren-buffetts-investing-advice-simple-not-smart\/?hyperlink_type=manual&amp;utm_term=incontent_link_10&amp;utm_campaign=1318280&amp;utm_source=yahoo.com&amp;utm_content=13&amp;utm_medium=rss\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" data-ylk=\"slk:investing consistently;elm:context_link;itc:0;sec:content-canvas\" class=\"link \">investing consistently<\/a>, being intentional with spending \u2014 are all great,\u201d End said. \u201cBut you don\u2019t have to take them to the extreme.
