{"id":262503,"date":"2025-10-31T08:36:22","date_gmt":"2025-10-31T08:36:22","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us\/262503\/"},"modified":"2025-10-31T08:36:22","modified_gmt":"2025-10-31T08:36:22","slug":"looking-into-proposition-8-inheritance-taxes","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us\/262503\/","title":{"rendered":"Looking into Proposition 8: Inheritance Taxes"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>WACO, Texas (KXXV) \u2014 Proposition 8 is on November&#8217;s ballot and if passed it would ban a tax from being imposed on inherited property following the passing of a loved one. <\/p>\n<p>On the ballot it reads: &#8220;The constitutional amendment to prohibit the legislature from imposing death taxes applicable to a decedent&#8217;s property or the transfer of an estate, inheritance, legacy, succession, or gift.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIn making sure that you don\u2019t have another tax sneak in,\u201d said Waco&#8217;s State Representative Pat Curry.<\/p>\n<p>25 News&#8217; Bobby Poitevint followed up by asking, \u201cis this something more so \u2014 because the language isn\u2019t already on the books, this just puts that language of not being able to allow it on the books?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Rep. Curry replied, \u201cvery simple yes.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>As mentioned in the <a class=\"Link\" href=\"https:\/\/hro-dfr.house.texas.gov\/bill-analysis?legislature=89&amp;session=R&amp;billNumber=HJR2\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">House Research Organization bill analysis<\/a>, critics said this \u201ccould hinder future legislatures from acting in the best interest of the state and lead to unintended consequences.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Constitutional amendments should be reserved for the most critical matters concerning the state, and there is currently no proposal in the Legislature to institute a death tax,\u201d the bill analysis said.<\/p>\n<p>Rep. Curry explained why this is important now and said if passed Proposition 8 would be a safeguard to protect Texans in the future.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Because the intent in the State of Texas is to show that we do not want to have an income tax of any form and other states have been able to try to get around that because of inheritance tax and put those in. So again, once you pass a constitutional amendment the voters have decided and that keeps it from coming back unless the voters decide to put one in,\u201d Rep.
