Designed by Pritzker Prize\u2013winning architect <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnn.com\/style\/article\/renzo-piano-royal-academy\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Renzo Piano<\/a>, the flat-roofed, single-story gallery in Riehen is gently nestled among centuries-old trees and mossy lily ponds, surrounded by green fields and vineyards, at the edge of Germany\u2019s Black Forest.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmhehgfl400033b6n4do3g9w1@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Since opening nearly 30 years ago, the Fondation Beyeler has hosted many site-specific artworks that engaged directly with its natural environment. In 1998, the late artist <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnn.com\/videos\/arts\/2020\/05\/22\/christo-interview-new-york-arc-de-triomphe-lon-orig.cnn\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Christo<\/a> wrapped 178 trees on the property in fabric, and, more recently, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnn.com\/style\/article\/olafur-eliasson-in-real-life\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Olafur Eliasson<\/a> removed part of the building\u2019s facade to effectively bring one of the outdoor ponds into the gallery itself. The Icelandic artist used a non-toxic dye to give the water a neon glow, describing the work as a \u201cmodel for a future landscape where human and non-humans can live together\u201d more harmoniously.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmhehgfl400043b6nl4qngetx@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            This week, the institution is announcing a groundbreaking new role. In what is believed to be the first role of its kind at a major art museum, the Fondation Beyeler has appointed Swiss academic Rahel Kesselring as its inaugural botanical curator. Her role will focus on the preservation of the site\u2019s flora and fauna and on developing public programming within its gardens.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmhei1kap000s3b6n1fmnfxta@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            The position \u2014 officially, the Chanel botanical curator \u2014 is supported by the Chanel Culture Fund, a philanthropic arm of the French luxury house that backs innovative cultural projects and initiatives around the world.\n    <\/p>\n<p>       <img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/10\/01-botanical-curator-rahel-kesselring-foto-gina-folly.jpg\" alt=\"Chanel Botanical Curator Rahel Kesselring\" class=\"image_large__dam-img image_large__dam-img--loading\" onload=\"this.classList.remove('image_large__dam-img--loading')\" onerror=\"imageLoadError(this)\" height=\"2400\" width=\"1600\" loading=\"lazy\"\/><\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmhehgfl400053b6nj0epxg5g@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Kesselring explained that her mission is to strengthen the dialogue between art and nature. \u201cPlants are enormously important for our culture,\u201d she said in a video interview. \u201cThey sustain us\u2026we live in a world that has been fully built by plants. We have a deep connection to them, physically, culturally and historically.\u201d\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmhehgfl400063b6n1qbj2lbs@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Museum director Sam Keller called the appointment a reflection of the institution\u2019s ethos. \u201cNature is not a backdrop to our work, but a living part of it,\u201d he said in a statement. \u201cThis role affirms our commitment to caring for the whole ecology of this place with the same depth, imagination and responsibility we bring to everything we do.\u201d\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmhehgfl400073b6nznfdfzmx@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Kesselring\u2019s appointment  presents a new model for arts institutions \u2014 expanding the idea of curatorial expertise beyond the white walls of a gallery and into the living landscape.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmhehgfl400083b6nnd54ebjx@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            With the symptoms of climate crisis increasingly felt by people and businesses, including those within the art world, the Fondation Beyeler is making a statement by putting ecological stewardship on par with artistic curation. Kesselring hopes it will inspire broader change or, at least, more public engagement. \u201cWe need to rewrite our understanding of our relationship with nature,\u201d she said.\n    <\/p>\n<p>       <img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/10\/05-fondation-beyeler-mark-niedermann.jpg\" alt=\"A view of the grounds of the Fondation Beyeler\" class=\"image_large__dam-img image_large__dam-img--loading\" onload=\"this.classList.remove('image_large__dam-img--loading')\" onerror=\"imageLoadError(this)\" height=\"1067\" width=\"1600\" loading=\"lazy\"\/><\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmhehgfl400093b6ntqe2aa0v@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Yana Peel, the president of arts, culture and heritage at Chanel, said during a video call that with no brick-and-mortar cultural institutions of its own (as is common for many luxury brands), the company has focused on contributing to others \u2014 seeking out ways to create impact on a project-by-project basis.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmhehgfl4000a3b6nsohy7ep8@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            \u201cWe have specifically not been sponsoring galas or parties or short-term projects,\u201d she said, explaining that they want to focus on \u201ctransformational\u201d work that is entirely non-transactional and not aimed at selling Chanel products. The initiative is about \u201cwanting to have a positive impact on the world,\u201d she said.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmhehgfl4000b3b6nio5k6dns@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Chanel did not confirm how long it would be funding Kesselring\u2019s role at the foundation but it\u2019s understood to be a multi-year partnership, in keeping with the fund\u2019s wider mission to focus on longer-term projects.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmhehgfl4000c3b6n90mxrba9@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Established five years ago, the Chanel Culture Fund has invested in 50 projects across 15 countries. Chanel is working with the Power Station of Art in Shanghai to support a significant renovation of the institution\u2019s third-floor gallery, including the addition of the first contemporary art library in China, with the capacity to house 50,000 books. In Brazil, the fund partnered with the Pinacoteca de S\u00e3o Paulo on a new annual residency program to support women artists.
