By August 2025, <a href=\"https:\/\/tradingeconomics.com\/united-states\/job-offers\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\" aria-label=\"Go to https:\/\/tradingeconomics.com\/united-states\/job-offers\" class=\"sc-5ad7098d-0 lcJVdL\">that figure had fallen<\/a> to 7.18 million. Higher rates reduce investment, spending, and economic activity, which naturally suppresses hiring. Thompson turned to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.employamerica.org\/staff\/preston-mui\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\" aria-label=\"Go to https:\/\/www.employamerica.org\/staff\/preston-mui\/\" class=\"sc-5ad7098d-0 lcJVdL\">Preston Mui<\/a>, a senior economist at <a href=\"https:\/\/www.employamerica.org\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\" aria-label=\"Go to https:\/\/www.employamerica.org\/\" class=\"sc-5ad7098d-0 lcJVdL\">Employ America<\/a>, for a sector-by-sector breakdown of job openings since ChatGPT\u2019s release, and the findings actually contradicted the AI narrative. The \u201cInformation\u201d sector\u2014which includes software programmers and tech workers most directly involved with AI\u2014had the smallest decline in job openings. The so-called Magnificent Seven stocks now account for more than one-third of the S&amp;P 500 index, a level of concentration that exceeds even the dot-com era. Employment for workers in less exposed fields and more experienced workers in the same occupations remained stable or continued to grow.<a href=\"https:\/\/digitaleconomy.stanford.edu\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/08\/Canaries_BrynjolfssonChandarChen.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\" aria-label=\"Go to https:\/\/digitaleconomy.stanford.edu\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/08\/Canaries_BrynjolfssonChandarChen.pdf\" class=\"sc-5ad7098d-0 lcJVdL\">\u200b<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.jpmorgan.com\/insights\/global-research\/artificial-intelligence\/ai-impact-job-growth\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\" aria-label=\"Go to https:\/\/www.jpmorgan.com\/insights\/global-research\/artificial-intelligence\/ai-impact-job-growth\" class=\"sc-5ad7098d-0 lcJVdL\">JPMorgan research<\/a> noted the unemployment rate among college graduates reached 5.8% in March 2024, the highest in more than four years, and has been trending above the aggregate rate\u2014a pattern that is highly unusual by historical standards. While the trend could reflect other factors, AI effects may also be at play, according to Michael Feroli, chief U.S. economist at JPMorgan.<a href=\"https:\/\/www.jpmorgan.com\/insights\/global-research\/artificial-intelligence\/ai-impact-job-growth\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\" aria-label=\"Go to https:\/\/www.jpmorgan.com\/insights\/global-research\/artificial-intelligence\/ai-impact-job-growth\" class=\"sc-5ad7098d-0 lcJVdL\">\u200b<\/p>\n<p>Still, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bls.gov\/opub\/ted\/2025\/ai-impacts-in-bls-employment-projections.htm\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\" aria-label=\"Go to https:\/\/www.bls.gov\/opub\/ted\/2025\/ai-impacts-in-bls-employment-projections.htm\" class=\"sc-5ad7098d-0 lcJVdL\">the Bureau of Labor Statistics predicts<\/a> many AI-exposed occupations will grow faster than average through 2033. Software developer employment is expected to increase 17.9% between 2023 and 2033, much faster than the 4% average for all occupations. The agency said while AI can automate certain tasks, it also creates demand for workers who develop and maintain AI systems.<a href=\"https:\/\/www.bls.gov\/opub\/ted\/2025\/ai-impacts-in-bls-employment-projections.htm\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\" aria-label=\"Go to https:\/\/www.bls.gov\/opub\/ted\/2025\/ai-impacts-in-bls-employment-projections.htm\" class=\"sc-5ad7098d-0 lcJVdL\">\u200b<\/p>\n<p>A tale of two economies<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.derekthompson.org\/p\/is-this-the-new-scariest-chart-in\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\" aria-label=\"Go to https:\/\/www.derekthompson.org\/p\/is-this-the-new-scariest-chart-in\" class=\"sc-5ad7098d-0 lcJVdL\">In his Substack<\/a>, Thompson said while the \u201cscariest chart in the world\u201d is a bit misleading, it appears to highlight one underlying truth: \u201cThere really do seem to be two economies right now\u2014a booming AI economy and a lackluster everything-else economy,\u201d he said.
