{"id":262984,"date":"2025-10-31T14:10:10","date_gmt":"2025-10-31T14:10:10","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us\/262984\/"},"modified":"2025-10-31T14:10:10","modified_gmt":"2025-10-31T14:10:10","slug":"a-signal-hidden-deep-in-your-brain-could-track-parkinsons-symptoms-sciencealert","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us\/262984\/","title":{"rendered":"A Signal Hidden Deep in Your Brain Could Track Parkinson&#8217;s Symptoms : ScienceAlert"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>A search for  <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sciencealert.com\/go\/IYl\" class=\"lar_link lar_link_outgoing\" data-linkid=\"73029\" data-postid=\"179672\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_self\">Parkinson&#8217;s<\/a> in the hiss of our brain&#8217;s static has revealed measures of motor control that could one day <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sciencealert.com\/smart-brain-implants-can-now-adapt-to-optimize-parkinsons-treatment\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">fine-tune precise forms of stimulation therapy<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Led by the Max Planck Institute for Human Cognitive and Brain Sciences in Germany, an international team of scientists combined five sets of electrophysiological data taken from deep within the brains of 119 people with Parkinson&#8217;s disease.<\/p>\n<p>By comparing specific brain-wave activity to the severity of individual patients&#8217; symptoms, the researchers were able to sift out patterns that could be confidently matched to the condition&#8217;s impact on movement.<\/p>\n<p>Related: <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sciencealert.com\/restless-legs-treatment-slashes-increased-risk-of-parkinsons-disease\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Restless Legs Treatment Slashes Increased Risk of Parkinson&#8217;s Disease<\/a> <\/p>\n<p>Parkinson&#8217;s disease is fundamentally a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.neurolab360.com\/blog\/basalgangliaandpd\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">breakdown in the functioning<\/a> of a part of the brain called the <a href=\"https:\/\/my.clevelandclinic.org\/health\/body\/23962-basal-ganglia\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">basal ganglia<\/a>, robbing people of the ability to filter information required to keep their body movements precise and steady. (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.canva.com\/photos\/MAC_WeBNVN4\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">decade3d\/Getty Images\/Canva<\/a>)<\/p>\n<p>In theory, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sciencealert.com\/dopamine-doesnt-work-in-our-brains-quite-the-way-we-thought\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">changes in the basal ganglia&#8217;s operation<\/a> should be noticeable in their electrical activity, appearing as a general excess of <a href=\"https:\/\/theconversation.com\/alpha-beta-theta-what-are-brain-states-and-brain-waves-and-can-we-control-them-219236\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">mid-to-high-range oscillations<\/a> known as <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Beta_wave\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">beta waves<\/a>, as well as an increase in spiking signals.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/doi.org\/10.1038\/s41531-022-00443-3\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Studies<\/a> have captured <a href=\"https:\/\/doi.org\/10.1113\/JP284768\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">plenty of beta-wave activity<\/a> in the past through electrodes implanted deep in the brain as a means of treatment. Although it was evident that these waves varied with symptom severity, the methods used to interpret the buzz left a lot to be desired.<\/p>\n<p>A mix of patient diversity, combinations of symptoms, and a lack of unaffected controls made it difficult to compare the brain-wave activity of diseased states with a &#8216;healthy&#8217; standard.<\/p>\n<p>By pooling multiple datasets and comparing differences in similar activity between more-or-less affected basal ganglia in each brain hemisphere, the researchers behind this latest study could &#8216;listen in&#8217; on harmonies hidden within the brain&#8217;s roar.<br \/><a href=\"https:\/\/www.sciencealert.com\/spark-into-space-comp\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/10\/Mid-Article-Promo-Astro-642x272.jpg\" alt=\"Win a $10,000 Space Coast Adventure Holiday\" width=\"642\" height=\"272\" class=\"alignnone wp-image-177074 size-medium\"   loading=\"lazy\"\/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>&#8220;You can imagine the brain as a concert hall full of musicians before a rehearsal,&#8221; <a href=\"https:\/\/www.mpg.de\/25632689\/1030-nepf-noise-as-a-signal-a-new-electrical-signature-of-parkinson-s-disease-149575-x\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">says<\/a> lead author and neurologist Moritz Gerster.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Some groups play together, creating a distinct rhythm. Others practice on their own, merging into a non-rhythmic &#8216;noise&#8217;. If you only measure the overall volume, you miss this distinction.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Identifying precise rhythms in the basal ganglia could eventually play a valuable role in <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sciencealert.com\/new-ultrasound-helmet-reaches-deep-inside-the-brain-without-surgery\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">treatments that use deep brain stimulation<\/a>.
