{"id":263668,"date":"2025-10-31T22:02:06","date_gmt":"2025-10-31T22:02:06","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us\/263668\/"},"modified":"2025-10-31T22:02:06","modified_gmt":"2025-10-31T22:02:06","slug":"retirees-call-for-idaho-to-restore-pensions-cost-of-living-adjustments","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us\/263668\/","title":{"rendered":"Retirees call for Idaho to restore pension\u2019s cost-of-living adjustments"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>BOLISE (<a href=\"https:\/\/idahocapitalsun.com\/briefs\/retirees-call-for-idaho-to-restore-pensions-cost-of-living-adjustments\/?fbclid=IwY2xjawNx6kBleHRuA2FlbQIxMABicmlkETFEZnRydkZrcVVuT1U1Q2QzAR5QJtr3yphJF0_k4X-2KrCT4vHClLJTIp9r8ypZjnUh18Ad01ZfDv87BHEWUA_aem_MpUh9vX15UwfpDfXHpRGFg\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Idaho Capital Sun<\/a>) \u2014 Some retired government employees in Idaho are calling for the state to restore inflation-adjusted cost of living adjustments through the state\u2019s pension program.<\/p>\n<p>The newly formed nonprofit, called the Retired Public Employees of Idaho, says it\u2019s hoping to strengthen the Public Employee Retirement System of Idaho, which is commonly called PERSI. <\/p>\n<p>In a news conference Thursday at the Idaho State Capitol, the group\u2019s spokesperson, former Boise Police Chief Mike Masterson, said the state\u2019s bumps to pension payouts for retired government employees haven\u2019t kept up with rising living costs. <\/p>\n<p>Between 2019 and 2024, PERSI retirement benefits only rose 8% while inflation rose by more than 22%, he said. In 2023, for example, PERSI\u2019s board has only approved a cost-of-living adjustment of around 1%, the Idaho Press reported.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSomething isn\u2019t right,\u201d Masterson told reporters. \u201cA strong pension system is an investment in Idaho\u2019s economy. 85% of retirees choose to remain in Idaho, and they receive 88% of the benefits that are paid. That money is largely reinvested in Idaho\u2019s local and state economies.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>PERSI is Idaho\u2019s state retirement pension program for many state and local government employees.
