{"id":2649,"date":"2025-07-11T22:26:04","date_gmt":"2025-07-11T22:26:04","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us\/2649\/"},"modified":"2025-07-11T22:26:04","modified_gmt":"2025-07-11T22:26:04","slug":"david-pollack-defends-pat-mcafees-role-in-espn-layoff","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us\/2649\/","title":{"rendered":"David Pollack defends Pat McAfee\u2019s role in ESPN layoff"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>When David Pollack was let go by ESPN, it didn\u2019t take long for fans to point fingers, many of them aimed squarely at Pat McAfee.<\/p>\n<p>After all, <a href=\"https:\/\/awfulannouncing.com\/espn\/espn-layoffs-jeff-van-gundy-suzy-kolber.html\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">ESPN\u2019s mass layoffs in the summer of 2023<\/a> coincided with a high-profile licensing deal for The Pat McAfee Show. McAfee had already completed one season on College GameDay, and optically, <a href=\"https:\/\/awfulannouncing.com\/espn\/pat-mcafee-espn-contract-superstars.html\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">it wasn\u2019t a great look<\/a>. One show arrived. Another personality vanished. And with Pollack \u2014 a Georgia legend \u2014 suddenly gone, McAfee\u2019s presence in the chair he used to occupy only fueled the noise.<\/p>\n<p>By the time McAfee took the stage at the SEC Championship Game in Atlanta, he fully leaned into his new role as a villain, at least in the eyes of Georgia fans. He teased them into thinking he was picking the Bulldogs, only to pull the rug from underneath them and take Alabama instead.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThey did not love me,\u201d <a href=\"https:\/\/awfulannouncing.com\/espn\/pat-mcafee-georgia-fans-david-pollack.html\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">McAfee said of Georgia fans<\/a>. \u201cYou\u2019ve gotta remember that the whole narrative all year was that because my show came to ESPN, obviously we fired Steve Young, we fired all the people that were here and were great people at ESPN. It was my show\u2019s fault. And then on GameDay, David Pollack got let go. David Pollack \u2014 who I am a massive fan of. One of the greatest Bulldogs of all time. A dude who was very good to me \u2014 obviously, I took his spot. So Georgia fans all year, not necessarily the biggest McAfee fans.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>McAfee didn\u2019t shy away from the heat; if anything, he welcomed it. But for all the speculation, Pollack himself isn\u2019t holding a grudge. Not against McAfee. <a href=\"https:\/\/awfulannouncing.com\/espn\/david-pollack-not-bitter-college-gameday-exit-underqualified.html\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Not against ESPN<\/a>. If anything, <a href=\"https:\/\/awfulannouncing.com\/espn\/david-pollack-very-thankful-fired-espn.html\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">he\u2019s thankful<\/a> it all played out the way it did.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThat\u2019s a topic that people always want to bring up, but I don\u2019t feel like that was Pat\u2019s fault,\u201d <a href=\"https:\/\/www.on3.com\/news\/david-pollack-reflects-on-espn-firing-pat-mcafee-taking-role-on-college-gameday\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">he told On3\u2019s Pete Nakos<\/a>. \u201cPat was hired to do a job, just like I would have been called in to do a job. I don\u2019t feel like Pat was the reason, no. They hired Pat, and Pat is really good at what he does, very different, very unique. A lot of times, when you\u2019re spending a lot of money on a show, there are also levels to who\u2019s important and who\u2019s not. I wasn\u2019t on the right side of that. That also happens in every business across the country every year.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Pollack admitted it became clear there likely wasn\u2019t going to be room for both personalities on the same desk. And while he didn\u2019t get into specifics about what offers may have come his way since leaving ESPN, he\u2019s not rushing back to the spotlight. Television still interests him, but for now, he\u2019s focused on family.<\/p>\n<p>And McAfee is focused on being McAfee.
