{"id":265756,"date":"2025-11-01T22:14:18","date_gmt":"2025-11-01T22:14:18","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us\/265756\/"},"modified":"2025-11-01T22:14:18","modified_gmt":"2025-11-01T22:14:18","slug":"narchitects-designs-twin-park-pavilions-on-either-side-of-the-hudson-river","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us\/265756\/","title":{"rendered":"nArchitects designs twin park pavilions on either side of the Hudson River"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Brooklyn-based studio <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dezeen.com\/tag\/narchitects\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\">nArchitects<\/a> has designed two waterfront park <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dezeen.com\/tag\/pavilions-tag\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\">pavilions<\/a> that address the conditions of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dezeen.com\/tag\/flood-prevention\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\">flood-prone<\/a> sites along the Hudson River in New York and New Jersey, USA.<\/p>\n<p>Both completed in 2024, the Gansevoort Peninsula Pavilion is located on the western side of Manhattan and projects into the Hudson River, while the ResilienCity Park Pavilion sits in the floodplain in Hoboken, New Jersey.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-2265194 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/11\/gansevoort-peninsula-pavilion-new-york-narchitects_dezeen_2364_col_15-852x568.jpg\" alt=\"nArchitects\" width=\"2364\" height=\"1577\"  \/>nArchitects has completed two waterfront park pavilions on either side of the Hudson River<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;We wanted the pavilions to feel open with portals that bring you into the parks,&#8221; Mimi Hoang, co-founding partner of <a href=\"https:\/\/narchitects.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\">nArchitects<\/a>, told Dezeen.<\/p>\n<p>Designed for the Hudson River Park Trust, the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dezeen.com\/2023\/10\/11\/field-operations-gansevoort-manhattan\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Gansevoort Peninsula Park<\/a> covers 5.65 acres on a previous mercantile and industrial site owned by the Department of Sanitation.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-2265181 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/11\/gansevoort-peninsula-pavilion-new-york-narchitects_dezeen_2364_col_3-852x501.jpg\" alt=\"Gansevoort Peninsula Pavilion\" width=\"2364\" height=\"1389\"  \/>Located on the western side of Manhattan, the Gansevoort Peninsula Pavilion is a concrete structure made of three interlinked volumes<\/p>\n<p>With landscape design by <a href=\"https:\/\/www.fieldoperations.net\/home.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\">Field Operations<\/a>, the park revitalises the last remaining stretch of 12th Avenue with a beach, kayak launch, sports field, salt marsh, boardwalk and open space for the community.<\/p>\n<p>The original installation featured large cuts into a dilapidated warehouse, and nArchitects created similar geometric forms and light effects by subtracting sections of the pavilion canopy.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-2265191 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/11\/gansevoort-peninsula-pavilion-new-york-narchitects_dezeen_2364_col_12-852x568.jpg\" alt=\"nArchitects pavilions\" width=\"2364\" height=\"1577\"  \/>Three separate volumes contain a concession stand, a restroom block and a utility hub for Heatherwick&#8217;s Little Island nearby<\/p>\n<p>The pavilion is composed of three volumes \u2013 a concession stand, a restroom block and a utility hub for Heatherwick Studio&#8217;s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dezeen.com\/tag\/little-island\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Little Island<\/a> nearby \u2013 under a concrete canopy that is punctured to allow sunlight down to the planted roofs of the volumes.<\/p>\n<p>Wrapped in an ultra-high-performance concrete, perforated rainstreet, the pavilion has no interior gathering space.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-2265200 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/11\/resiliencity-park-new-jersey-narchitects_dezeen_2364_col_1-852x1278.jpg\" alt=\"Resiliencity Park by nArchitects\" width=\"1576\" height=\"2364\"  \/>ResilienCity Park Pavilion is located across the river in Hoboken, New Jersey<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;A series of portals between the volumes and the canopy frame views towards the water, connecting the pedestrian and bike promenade activity on the east with the park activities to the west,&#8221; the studio said.<\/p>\n<p>The windows and flood doors are painted orange, and when the pavilion is illuminated at night, it appears to glow amber from the inside.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-2265203 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/11\/resiliencity-park-new-jersey-narchitects_dezeen_2364_col_4-852x568.jpg\" alt=\"Resiliencity Park by nArchitects\" width=\"2364\" height=\"1577\"  \/>The nArchitects pavilion sits on the park&#8217;s highest point<\/p>\n<p>Across the River, ResilienCity Park is now Hoboken&#8217;s largest public park at 5.4 acres, completed with Philadelphia-based <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theolinstudio.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\">Olin Studio<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>The pavilion sits on the park&#8217;s highest point with views of the surrounding sports fields, passive playspaces, neighbourhood and nearby Palisades Park.<\/p>\n<p>\t\t\t\t<a href=\"https:\/\/www.dezeen.com\/2022\/10\/21\/narchitects-mass-timber-jones-beach-nature-centre\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\"><br \/>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<img loading=\"lazy\" width=\"191\" height=\"191\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/11\/narchitect-na-jones-beach-center-architectura-new-york_dezeen_2364_sq2-191x191.jpg\" class=\"excludeLightbox wp-post-image\" alt=\"Jones Beach Energy Centre\" decoding=\"async\" data-pin-nopin=\"true\"  \/><\/p>\n<p> nARCHITECTS tops New York nature centre with a mass-timber roof\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/p>\n<p>\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/a><\/p>\n<p>The oversized canopy made of corrugated, perforated stainless steel creates a porch-like environment for the two volumes \u2013 housing a flexible community room and a cafe space \u2013 clad in a vertical granite rain screen.<\/p>\n<p>Circular openings were cut into the canopy, allowing plants to climb up thin columns and onto the roof in what Hoang called &#8220;Dr Seuss trees&#8221; that connect the pavilion to the larger landscape design.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-2265201 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/11\/resiliencity-park-new-jersey-narchitects_dezeen_2364_col_2-852x568.jpg\" alt=\"Resiliencity Park by nArchitects\" width=\"2364\" height=\"1577\"  \/>It features an oversized canopy made of corrugated, perforated stainless steel<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;This is the gateway, rather than the jewel of the park,&#8221; Hoang said, emphasising the importance of the space between the volumes for community building and programming.<\/p>\n<p>The glass of the doors and windows was selected to hold up against the hydrostatic force of floodwaters, and the bottom sills of the windows are lifted out of the flood elevation.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-2265209 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/11\/resiliencity-park-new-jersey-narchitects_dezeen_2364_col_10-852x568.jpg\" alt=\"Resiliencity Park by nArchitects\" width=\"2364\" height=\"1576\"  \/>It was designed to withstand the force of flooding, as the park is located in a floodplain.
