Grok is on its worst behavior again.<\/p>\n
As Canada\u2019s CBC reports<\/a>, a Toronto mom claims that a version of Elon Musk\u2019s AI chatbot installed in her Tesla asked her 12-year-old son to \u201csend nudes\u201d during a completely innocent conversation about soccer stars \u2014 which, if true, is another egregious example of the bot\u2019s dire lack of safeguards.<\/p>\n The mom, Farah Nasser, said that the offputting incident happened while she was driving her son and 10-year-old daughter back from school earlier this month. After the boy asked Grok if it thought Cristiano Ronaldo or Lionel Messi was the superior soccer player, the notoriously foul-mouthed chatbot<\/a> began trash talking Messi.<\/p>\n Her son joined in on the banter, and that\u2019s when the wildly inappropriate remark came.<\/p>\n \u201cThe chatbot said to my son, \u2018Why don\u2019t you send me some nudes?’\u201d Nasser, a former journalist and news anchor \u2014 a pretty trustworthy source, in other words \u2014 told the CBC. \u201cI was at a loss for words.\u201d<\/p>\n \u201cWhy is a chatbot asking my children to send naked pictures in our family car?\u201d she added. \u201cIt just didn\u2019t make sense.\u201d<\/p>\n Musk, a culture warrior and anti-\u201cwoke\u201d crusader, built Grok at his company xAI to reflect his irreverence towards what\u2019s proper, his extreme distrust of mainstream media,\u00a0 and his supposed free speech absolutism.\u00a0<\/p>\n In a word, the chatbot is edgy. It was trained in part on peoples\u2019 posts on Musk\u2019s site X, formerly Twitter, which it\u2019s integrated into, allowing it to reply to posts like a regular user.<\/p>\n Sometimes Grok goes fully mask-off, like its infamous meltdown<\/a> this summer during which it began calling itself \u201cMechaHitler,\u201d or before that, an episode in which it randomly began bringing up the racist conspiracy theory that held a \u201cwhite genocide<\/a>\u201d was taking place in South Africa, which Musk believes in.\u00a0<\/p>\n Relevant to our story here is that it was only several days after the \u201cMechaHitler\u201d incident \u2014 which went unacknowledged by Musk \u2014 that Musk announced Grok would be automatically installed in newer Tesla vehicles, immediately sparking concern<\/a> that the bot\u2019s provocative bent would result in some catastrophically inappropriate conversations taking place with a kid in the car. The Grok update rolled out to US customers this summers, and came to Canadian drivers in October.<\/p>\n According to Nasser, her son had chosen one of Grok\u2019s voice personalities called \u201cGork,\u201d a deliberate misspelling of the chatbot\u2019s name that became a meme among Musk and his fans. It\u2019s described simply as a \u201clazy male,\u201d something that doesn\u2019t adequately warn you of just how unhinged it can get.<\/p>\n \u201c\u2018Lazy male\u2019 doesn\u2019t describe Gork,\u201d Nasser told the CBC. \u201cR-rated, spicy \u2014 anything else would have made sure that my child would not press that button.\u201d<\/p>\n Nasser added that the car\u2019s NSFW setting was disabled, but that her \u201ckids mode\u201d function wasn\u2019t on. It\u2019s still alarming, though, that the default version of the bot would go to such risky territory.<\/p>\n Tesla didn\u2019t respond to the CBC\u2019s request for comment. But xAI did, with what appears to be an automated reply.<\/p>\n \u201cLegacy media lies,\u201d it said. Where have we heard that before<\/a>?<\/p>\n
