{"id":26617,"date":"2025-07-21T17:37:07","date_gmt":"2025-07-21T17:37:07","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us\/26617\/"},"modified":"2025-07-21T17:37:07","modified_gmt":"2025-07-21T17:37:07","slug":"wimbledon-expansion-plans-to-proceed-as-uk-court-rejects-challenge","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us\/26617\/","title":{"rendered":"Wimbledon expansion plans to proceed as UK court rejects challenge"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Jul 21, 2025, 10:22 AM ET<\/p>\n<p>Wimbledon&#8217;s plans to expand the grounds of the world&#8217;s oldest and most prestigious Grand Slam in tennis overcame its first legal hurdle on Monday, as London&#8217;s High Court rejected a challenge to the project by campaigners.<\/p>\n<p>Campaign group Save Wimbledon Park <a href=\"https:\/\/www.espn.com\/tennis\/story?_slug_=wimbledon-all-england-club-legal-battle-expand-grounds&amp;id=45687449\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">took legal action<\/a> over planning permission granted to the All England Lawn Tennis and Croquet Club (AELTC), which wants to treble the size of its main site in a \u00a3200 million ($269.6m) project.<\/p>\n<p>The expansion would see the grounds feature 39 new courts, an 8,000-seat show court, an increased daily capacity of 50,000 people, and allow qualifying rounds to be held on the site which has been home to the Championships since 1877.<\/p>\n<p><img class=\" lazyload lazyload\" data-image-container=\".inline-photo\" height=\"320\" width=\"570\"\/>Wimbledon&#8217;s daily capacity could rise by 8,000 people if the expansion is completed.\u00a0Rob Newell &#8211; Wimbledon champs Swiatek No. 3 in WTA; Sinner still tops ATP<\/a><\/p>\n<p>Planning permission was approved by the Greater London Authority last year, but Save Wimbledon Park argued at a hearing this month that the GLA failed to properly take account of restrictions on redeveloping the land, agreed when the AELTC&#8217;s parent company bought the golf course freehold in 1993.<\/p>\n<p>Judge Pushpinder Saini rejected Save Wimbledon Park&#8217;s challenge to the lawfulness of planning permission, but Wimbledon&#8217;s plans still face another legal battle regarding the status of the land, which will be heard early next year.<\/p>\n<p>AELTC chair Debbie Jevans said she was delighted with the ruling, and that the club will &#8220;now turn our attention to separate legal proceedings&#8221;
