Wyndham Clark expressed remorse Sunday after an \u201cawful\u201d locker-destroying meltdown<\/a> at this year\u2019s U.S. Open resulted in his banishment<\/a> from Oakmont Country Club.<\/p>\n

Speaking to reporters<\/a> following a fourth-place finish at the British Open, where he shot 11-under-par at Royal Portrush in Northern Ireland, Clark shared that he hopes to be welcomed back to the Pittsburgh-area course in the future, but understands it\u2019s \u201cup to them.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cI did something awful, and I\u2019m really sorry for it. Hopefully, they have it in their heart to forgive me, and maybe in the future I\u2019ll be able to play there,\u201d the 31-year-old Clark said, according to ESPN.<\/p>\n

Clark ignited a storm of controversy in June when he destroyed lockers inside the Oakmont clubhouse after missing the cut at the 2025 U.S. Open \u2014 two years removed from his first major win in the tournament at the Los Angeles Country Club.<\/p>\n

Last week, Oakmont elaborated on its decision to bar Clark in a letter to members.<\/p>\n

\u201cSeveral of you have inquired about the situation involving Wyndham Clark and the steps being taken in response to his recent behavior. Following multiple discussions with the USGA and the OCC Board, a decision has been made that Mr. Clark will no longer be permitted on OCC property,\u201d club president John Lynch said, according to a copy of the letter<\/a> obtained by Golf Digest.<\/p>\n

\u201cThis decision will remain in effect unless formally reconsidered and approved by the Board.<\/p>\n

\u201cReinstatement would be contingent upon Mr. Clark fulfilling a number of specific conditions, including full repayment for damages, a meaningful contribution to a charity of the Board\u2019s choosing, and the successful completion of counseling and\/or anger management sessions.\u201d<\/p>\n

Clark, who flung his driver<\/a> in a startling PGA Championship scene in May, added Sunday he wants to show the Pittsburgh community that what transpired at Oakmont is \u201cnot a reflection of who I am.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cObviously, it\u2019s a no-brainer to pay for the damages. That was a given. Then obviously all the apologies, and I want to give back to the community because I hurt a great place in Pittsburgh, so I wanted to do anything I can to show them that what happened there was not a reflection of who I am and won\u2019t happen again,\u201d Clark said.<\/p>\n

The 2033 U.S. Open will be hosted at Oakmont, which happens to coincide with the final year of Clark\u2019s 10-year exemption following his 2023 victory.<\/p>\n

This year\u2019s British Open marked Clark\u2019s best finish at the major.<\/p>\n

Scottie Scheffler went on to win his second major<\/a> of the year and his fourth overall after cruising to a four-shot win.
