That at least seems to be what\u00a0Sotheby\u2019s\u00a0is betting on when it offers the Italian conceptual prankster infamous 18-karat, solid gold toilet. Titled\u00a0America\u00a0(2016), it will be plumbed into a bathroom in the\u00a0Breuer Building\u00a0, Sotheby\u2019s new HQ, and visitors will be invited to view it one-by-one beginning November 8. In an auction first, when the 100-kilogram toilet hits the block\u00a0on November 18, the starting bid will be determined by the price of the work\u2019s weight in gold\u2014or around\u00a0$10 million. \u201cCattelan\u2019s incisive commentary on the collision of artistic production and commodity value has never felt more timely,\u201d Sotheby\u2019s said in a statement. Sotheby\u2019s confirmed to\u00a0ARTnews<\/a>\u00a0that no bidders have dropped a big deposit to secure the work with an irrevocable bid ahead of the sale.\u00a0<\/p>\n

New York\u2013based artist\u00a0Tom Sachs\u00a0is now represented by\u00a0The Lede Company, a PR agency rather than a gallery. The announcement clarified that\u00a0Thaddaeus Ropac\u00a0, Sachs\u2019s long-time dealer, remains responsible for his fine art, while The Lede will handle brand and media collaborations. This division raises questions about where a gallery\u2019s remit ends and an agency\u2019s begins. Sachs\u2019s practice, rooted in critiques of consumer culture, has evolved to embrace high-profile partnerships, including with\u00a0Levi\u2019s\u00a0and\u00a0Nike, for whom he designed the Mars Yard 3.0\u00a0sneakers and a related app. He describes Nike as a \u201cmegaphone\u201d for his ideas, giving him reach far beyond the art market.<\/p>\n
