{"id":266691,"date":"2025-11-02T10:11:09","date_gmt":"2025-11-02T10:11:09","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us\/266691\/"},"modified":"2025-11-02T10:11:09","modified_gmt":"2025-11-02T10:11:09","slug":"christmas-island-shrew-declared-extinct-after-decades-without-a-sighting","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us\/266691\/","title":{"rendered":"Christmas Island shrew declared extinct after decades without a sighting"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">A leading researcher has described the extinction of the Christmas Island shrew as &#8220;another stain&#8221; on Australia&#8217;s environmental record.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">The mouse-sized mammal was officially added to the International Union for the Conservation of Nature&#8217;s (IUCN) Red List of extinct species this month.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">The Australian government is a member of the IUCN, the world&#8217;s most comprehensive database for the conservation status of flora and fauna.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">Charles Darwin University professor John Woinarski said questions about the shrew&#8217;s extinction had been asked for decades.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">&#8220;It&#8217;s another species that we can&#8217;t share with our grandchildren or their descendants,&#8221; Professor Woinarski said.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;We&#8217;ve failed the shrew and we&#8217;ve failed many other species and we continue to fail.&#8221;<img decoding=\"async\" alt=\"An old growth tree climbs out of the jungle against a cloudy blue sky.\" class=\"Image_image__5tFYM ContentImage_image__DQ_cq\"  src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/11\/5907402017faf6d67855ce57b7860b65\" loading=\"lazy\" data-component=\"Image\" data-lazy=\"true\"\/><\/p>\n<p class=\"Typography_base__sj2RP FigureCaption_text__zDxQ5 Typography_sizeMobile12__w_FPC Typography_lineHeightMobile20___U7Vr Typography_regular__WeIG6 Typography_colourInherit__dfnUx\" data-component=\"Typography\">Four of five mammals endemic to Christmas Island from the time of settlement have been declared extinct. (ABC Pilbara: Alistair Bates)<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">The extinction has renewed concern for the native wildlife remaining on the remote territory of Christmas Island, more than 1,500 kilometres north of mainland Australia.<\/p>\n<p>&#8216;Twilight zone&#8217;<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">The Christmas Island shrew was abundant when the remote island was first settled and the commercial mining of phosphate began in 1888.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">The shrew ate beetles and other invertebrates on the rainforest floor, and was distinctive for its twittering cry and musky scent.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">&#8220;[The shrew] almost disappeared within a couple of years after black rats were inadvertently introduced to the island,&#8221; Professor Woinarski said<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">&#8220;It&#8217;s been in this sort of twilight zone of \u2026 is it extinct for at least 40 years now.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" alt=\"A thick jungle leaf is illuminated by the sun.\" class=\"Image_image__5tFYM ContentImage_image__DQ_cq\"  src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/11\/58e2324b2ff24eaee6efeb6f79f73972\" loading=\"lazy\" data-component=\"Image\" data-lazy=\"true\"\/><\/p>\n<p class=\"Typography_base__sj2RP FigureCaption_text__zDxQ5 Typography_sizeMobile12__w_FPC Typography_lineHeightMobile20___U7Vr Typography_regular__WeIG6 Typography_colourInherit__dfnUx\" data-component=\"Typography\">The shrew was last sighted in March 1985, tallying only four reports in 120 years. (ABC Pilbara: Mietta Adams)<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">He believed the introduction of a parasite carried by the rats was to blame.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">Four of five mammals endemic to Christmas Island have become extinct since the late 1800s.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">That includes two types of native rats, the bulldog and Maclear&#8217;s, and a tiny bat known as the Christmas Island pipistrelle.<\/p>\n<p>Lone survivor<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">Western Sydney University ecologist Annabel Dorrestein said the shrew&#8217;s listing came as no surprise.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">&#8220;It also drives home the message of like, we really don&#8217;t have many native animals left, and you really need to help what is left on the island,&#8221; she said.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" alt=\"Christmas Island bat in hand\" class=\"Image_image__5tFYM ContentImage_image__DQ_cq\"  src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/11\/fd93331b8245efc1aa72a4f7806887c1\" loading=\"lazy\" data-component=\"Image\" data-lazy=\"true\"\/><\/p>\n<p class=\"Typography_base__sj2RP FigureCaption_text__zDxQ5 Typography_sizeMobile12__w_FPC Typography_lineHeightMobile20___U7Vr Typography_regular__WeIG6 Typography_colourInherit__dfnUx\" data-component=\"Typography\">The fruit bat is slightly smaller than its mainland relatives. (Supplied: Chris Bray)<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">Dr Dorrestein is researching the Christmas Island flying fox, which is the only surviving mammal endemic to the Island and is critically low in number.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">&#8220;With [settlement] came, obviously, hunting, and the introduction of black rats, of <a class=\"Link_link__kR0xA Link_link__5eL5m ScreenReaderOnly_srLinkHint__OysWz Link_showVisited__C1Fea Link_showFocus__ALyv2\" href=\"https:\/\/www.abc.net.au\/news\/2019-01-16\/wasps-enlisted-to-control-crazy-ants-on-christmas-island\/10666868\" data-component=\"Link\" data-uri=\"coremedia:\/\/article\/10666868\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">yellow crazy ants<\/a>, and over time, the wolf snake,&#8221; she said.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;You&#8217;ve also seen with the Christmas Island flying fox a huge decline \u2026 it is definitely part of this trend.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">Dr Dorrestein urged the federal government to take urgent action to protect native fauna on Christmas Island.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">&#8220;I do think that, because they&#8217;re so far away as an island, the island doesn&#8217;t get the attention and money it deserves,&#8221; she said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">&#8220;Christmas Island flying foxes [are] listed as critically endangered, but is the only one that doesn&#8217;t have a recovery plan in Australia.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" alt=\"A furry flying fox in full flight against a soft blue sky.\" class=\"Image_image__5tFYM ContentImage_image__DQ_cq\"  src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/11\/37f0ffcc89149160346aaed4926516f0\" loading=\"lazy\" data-component=\"Image\" data-lazy=\"true\"\/><\/p>\n<p class=\"Typography_base__sj2RP FigureCaption_text__zDxQ5 Typography_sizeMobile12__w_FPC Typography_lineHeightMobile20___U7Vr Typography_regular__WeIG6 Typography_colourInherit__dfnUx\" data-component=\"Typography\">The Christmas Island flying fox is the only critically endangered species in Australia without a recovery plan.
