When a graphic designer lives to be 97 years old, he tends to accumulate a lot of published and unpublished work. In Walter Allner\u2019s case, it\u2019s a lot of consistently emblematic work, which his son, Peter Allner, is happy to share with others. Thanks to Peter\u2019s generosity\u2014as well as his desire to have his father\u2019s legacy remembered\u2014he has allowed me to publish some of the treasure trove of ephemera that, curiously, stands the test of time as it defines Midcentury Modernism from the late 1950s until the 1980s.<\/p>\n

A few weeks ago I focused<\/a> on Allner\u2019s Bauhaus-inspired prints and posters, with a hint of his 70+ Fortune magazine covers. Today we look at similarly inspired work done for other clients.<\/p>\n

Long before the personal computer revolutionized the methods used to produce graphic design, Allner predicted the integration of aesthetics and advanced technology, and thus worked directly with computer engineers whenever he could.<\/p>\n

\u201cAllner\u2019s interest in science, coupled with a venturesome spirit, has led him into exciting new design fields,\u201d wrote John Lahr in a 1966 PRINT article.<\/p>\n

He also experimented with ways of dealing with light and pioneered a form of kinetic light painting. From these influences came the color fields, geometric forms and reductive imagery that he was known for. <\/p>\n
