President Donald Trump<\/a> said in a taped CBS 60 Minutes interview aired Sunday that he may not allow the export of Nvidia\u2019s (NVDA)<\/a> Blackwell chips<\/a> to other countries. According to Reuters, Trump<\/a> wants to reserve these most advanced artificial intelligence<\/a> (AI) chips for use within the U.S. to strengthen American technological dominance.<\/p>\n

Aboard Air Force One, Trump remarked, \u201cThe new Blackwell that just came out, it\u2019s 10 years ahead of every other chip\u2026 But no, we don\u2019t give that chip to other people<\/a>.\u201d<\/p>\n

Are Trump\u2019s Comments Directed to China?<\/p>\n

Trump did not explicitly mention whether his comments targeted China in particular. However, the U.S. administration has always been concerned about the misuse of AI<\/a> chips for the advancement of China\u2019s military operations. Republican Congressman John Moolenaar, chairman of the House Select Committee on China, recently compared the proposal to \u201chanding Iran weapons-grade uranium.\u201d<\/p>\n

If implemented, Trump\u2019s position could impose tighter export limits than current U.S. policy, potentially blocking not only China but also other nations from accessing Nvidia\u2019s most advanced products. The remarks come shortly after Trump and Chinese President Xi Jinping agreed on a one-year deal addressing rare-earth minerals<\/a> and fentanyl-related trade measures. Though Trump earlier suggested that Nvidia\u2019s chip exports might be discussed during their meeting, he later clarified that the topic did not arise. \u00a0<\/p>\n

Questions have arisen over whether Trump would permit shipments of a scaled-down version of Nvidia\u2019s Blackwell chips to China, following his earlier suggestion that such sales might be allowed. In the interview, Trump left open the possibility of access to a downgraded model, saying \u201cWe will let them deal with Nvidia but not in terms of the most advanced.\u201d<\/p>\n

Nvidia\u2019s Position and Global Market Exposure<\/p>\n

Nvidia has acknowledged U.S. concerns about technology transfer and has refrained from obtaining U.S. export licenses for the Chinese markets. At the GTC event last week, CEO Jensen Huang<\/a> said, \u201cThey\u2019ve made it very clear that they don\u2019t want Nvidia to be there right now.\u201d However, Huang has argued that American chipmakers need global access to sustain their research and maintain leadership in AI innovation.<\/p>\n

China remains one of Nvidia\u2019s largest markets, providing critical revenue to finance research and development in the U.S. At the same event, Nvidia announced plans to supply about 260,000 Blackwell AI chips to South Korea<\/a>, including to companies such as Samsung Electronics (SSNLF)<\/a>. It is unclear whether those sales will move forward if the administration enforces new restrictions.<\/p>\n

Nvidia recently became the world\u2019s most valuable company, surpassing $5 trillion in market capitalization<\/a>. The company\u2019s rise has been driven by strong demand for its AI chips, which underpin much of the global boom in AI development.<\/p>\n
