Former Red Hot Chili Peppers<\/a> guitarist Dave Navarro has looked back on his time with the band and the backlash that followed when he replaced John Frusciante<\/a>.<\/p>\n

Frusciante departed the band in 1992 and Navarro, who had left Jane\u2019s Addiction<\/a> when they broke up the year before, stepped in. He only recorded one album with the band, \u2018One Hot Minute\u2019, and it failed to be as successful as their previous studio album, 1991\u2019s \u2018Blood Sugar Sex Magik\u2019.<\/p>\n

In April 1998, the band announced Navarro\u2019s departure, and Frusciante rejoined the same month. He left again in 2009, before rejoining a decade later. With Frusciante back in the band, they had a run of successful albums including \u2018Californication\u2019, \u2018By The Way\u2019 and \u2018Stadium Arcadium\u2019<\/a>, and Navarro has admitted in a recent interview with Guitar World<\/a> that he felt out of place in the band.<\/p>\n

\u201cWhatever magic John brought to the Chili Peppers, I didn\u2019t have that style of magic,\u201d he said, describing himself as a \u201cgoth kid in a funk band\u201d.<\/p>\n

He explained: \u201cIf you had to narrow down what the disconnect was, I\u2019d say that would be it \u2026 It became clear pretty fast that as much as we tried and as much as we wanted it to work, we weren\u2019t coming from the same musical place.<\/p>\n<\/p>\n

\u201cThe best way I can describe it is that I was in a cover band with the actual band. And that\u2019s a very strange place to be \u2013 especially with the clashing of styles.\u201d<\/p>\n

Navarro addressed the reaction he received from \u201cdiehard fans\u201d, explaining, \u201cThere was a lot of backlash from the fanbase because I was filling John\u2019s role.\u201d<\/p>\n

He continued, \u201cI always found it odd that any of that was directed at me. I was like, \u2018Well, if you don\u2019t like me being here, you can blame them. I didn\u2019t force myself into this, they asked me. All I did was say yes.\u2019\u201d<\/p>\n

He said the lukewarm reception \u2018One Hot Minute\u2019 received impacted everyone in the band, but that he was \u201cfeeling the brunt\u201d of the question marks over the album\u2019s direction. But despite that, he described it as the \u201cmost successful record\u201d he\u2019d ever played on, so it felt like a win for him personally but a failure for the rest of the band.<\/p>\n<\/p>\n

Navarro and Frusciante, meanwhile, teamed up together in 2020 to play Jane\u2019s Addiction\u2019s \u2018Mountain Song\u2019 at a memorial show<\/a> to honour Andrew Burkle. The following year, Navarro joined Red Hot Chili Peppers frontman Anthony Kiedis to cover Lou Reed\u2019s \u2018Walk On The Wild Side\u2019<\/a> as part of Navarro\u2019s Above Ground charity concert to raise awareness and funds for mental health for people in the music industry under the MusiCares programme. It marked the first time the pair had performed together since Navarro left the band.<\/p>\n

As for Jane\u2019s Addiction, however, Navarro said earlier this year that there\u2019s \u201cno chance\u201d they\u2019ll ever play together again<\/a>. Last year, the band\u2019s classic line-up of Navarro, Perry Farrell, Eric Avery and Stephen Perkins performed together for the first time since 2010, and they released their first new music together in 34 years<\/a>, but the comeback ended abruptly after frontman Farrell punched Navarro onstage in a show in Boston<\/a>.<\/p>\n

At the time, they announced an immediate hiatus<\/a>, cancelling the rest of the tour, and Navarro told Guitar Player<\/a> earlier this year, \u201cThere was an altercation onstage, and all the hard work and dedication and writing and hours in the studio, and picking up and leaving home and crisscrossing the country and Europe and trying to overcome my illness \u2014 it all came to a screeching halt and forever destroyed the band\u2019s life.<\/p>\n

\u201cAnd there\u2019s no chance for the band to ever play together again. I have to say that\u2019s my least favourite gig, without throwing animosity around, and without naming names and pointing fingers, and coming up with reasons.\u201d<\/p>\n
