\n\tWith just one day to go, New York\u2019s Performa<\/a> biennial said it had made the last-minute decision to postpone a new work by Lina\u00a0Lapelyt\u0117<\/a> because the piece\u2019s venue remained shuttered by the government shutdown.<\/p>\n

\n\tThe work, titled The Speech (NYC), involves 100 children making what a description labels \u201cprimal sounds\u2014coos, cries, barks, howls, and roars.\u201d It\u2019s a new version of a preexisting work that has previously been shown at venues such as Paris\u2019s Bourse de Commerce.<\/p>\n

\n\tLapelyt\u0117, whose opera for the Lithuanian Pavilion at the 2019 Venice Biennale<\/a> won her the Golden Lion alongside Vaiva Grainyt\u0117 and Rugil\u0117 Barzd\u017eiukait\u0117, had planned to debut the work on Wednesday at the Federal Hall National Memorial, the first capitol building of the US. But because the site is operated by the National Parks Service, it remains closed, along with most other organizations that receive government funding, including the Smithsonian museums<\/a> and the National Gallery of Art<\/a>.<\/p>\n

\n\t\u201cOur original venue, Federal Hall, a historic site of American democracy where oaths were once sworn and voices first rose to shape a nation, remains closed at this time, under the management of the National Park Service,\u201d Performa said in a statement. \u201cWe are working with colleagues around the city to confirm a new venue, and will share updates as soon as we have them.\u201d<\/p>\n

\n\tPerforma has rescheduled Wednesday\u2019s performance of The Speech (NYC) for November 17.<\/p>\n

\n\tLapelyt\u0117\u2019s piece is one of eight being staged as part of this year\u2019s biennial.
