Even though individual needs may vary, chronic sleep deprivation, while sounding harmless, can over a period of time, lead to a host of health issues, such as obesity, diabetes, depression, high blood pressure, stroke, and heart disease. Dr Kunal Sood, Double Board Certified MD, in a video spoke about how even one night of poor sleep can play havoc with your immune system and how can one restore it…

How less is too less

Dr. Amit Sood in the video, underscores that sleep serves as the cornerstone of a healthy system. Nabbing four hours or less of shut‑eye in a night, does more than leave one groggy; it gnaws at the system’s ability to fend off pathogens. The cells responsible for fighting viruses and bacteria become less active, making the body more vulnerable to illness. As we sleep, the body manufactures proteins and cells, so a deficit in rest, translates into a noticeable dip in those natural defenses.

Easy home remedies to get rid of headaches

What goes on in the body when you don’t sleep

Even one night of poor sleep changes the way immune cells behave, according to Dr. Sood and supporting research. According to Dr Sood, Killer (NK) cells, who destroy infected or malignant cells, appear to lose a sizable portion of their effectiveness after only four hours of rest, and the data consistently show a dip in NK cell activity. At the same time, sleep loss fuels a rise in messengers called cytokines; when these linger at elevated levels, they can set the stage for long‑term hazards such as heart disease. Together, these findings underscore how sleep and immune balance are intertwined.

How sleep boosts memory

Sleep also gives the immune system a chance to ‘remember’ viruses and bacteria it has already fought-a phenomenon known as immune memory. Think of it like children getting high fever over and over again, while growing up. Eventually, the number of instances of getting a fever go down, since your body has built up immunity over them, and most of the times, you won’t even realise that you have had a low grade fever, since the body has already fought that for you. This occurs because while the body rests, immune cells tighten those ‘records’, much like the brain consolidates memories during sleep. This sharpening lets the body mount a response the next time the same germs try to break in. The result is also a boost in vaccine effectiveness, which helps protect health over time.

The good news? Your immune system can bounce back

Dr. Sood however, makes it known that a single night of sleep isn’t going to cause lasting damage. When you get back into a regular sleep routine, your immune system can rebound. The data show that after you make up lost rest, immune cells function better and inflammatory markers drop. In short, consistently prioritising sleep, lets your body repair, defend itself more effectively.

The far‑reaching health repercussions of chronic sleep loss

Sleep deprivation does more than merely sap the system; it rattles facets of both physical and mental health. When sleep is scarce, the brain operates at a poor capacity- because of this, concentration wanes, learning becomes laborious, and emotional regulation falters. The shortage also throws hormone production off balance, upsetting the signals that govern appetite, stress and growth, which can set the stage for weight gain, heightened diabetes risk, and cardiovascular disease. Persistent lack of sleep fuels inflammation across the body, sowing the seeds for a host of health problems. Hence, solid sleep is a cornerstone of health, and not a boost for immunity.

Sleep hacks that give your immune system a boost

Dr. Sood says that putting sleep at the top of the priority list, is a way to give your system a boost. To lift the quality of your sleep, try these suggestions:• Seek seven to eight hours of restorative sleep, per night.• Keep a sleep timetable-heading to bed and waking at the same hour each day.• Leave bright lights off before hitting the sack.• Cut back on caffeine, for at least 6 hours prior to sleeping. Avoid meals after dark, or at least 3 hours before sleeping. • Dim the lights, and switch off the sounds. Keep the room cool for sleep.

We all know that good quality sleep is crucial for our health, longevity, and even immunity.
