What kind of fast should you be doing<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIf a patient is just simply looking to reduce visceral fat, then I start with a 12-12 fast,\u201d says Dr Jamnadas. \u201cThat means 12 hours you don\u2019t eat anything, you just drink liquids with no <a class=\"backlink\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.hindustantimes.com\/lifestyle\/health\/mom-of-2-with-no-time-for-gym-calorie-tracking-shares-her-top-8-fitness-secrets-no-strict-diet-or-meals-after-6pm-101762147489882.html\" data-vars-page-type=\"story\" data-vars-link-type=\"Manual\" data-vars-anchor-text=\"calories\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">calories<\/a> in them, and then the next 12 hours are your feeding period.\u201d He recommends following this schedule for two to three weeks, allowing your body to adapt. After that, he suggests gradually shifting to an 18-6 fasting plan.<\/p>\n<p>\u201c18-6 means six hours you get to eat, and for 18 hours it\u2019s only water, black tea, black coffee, or green tea, no calories,\u201d he adds. \u201cThat\u2019s one type of fasting that works well for most people trying to lose fat and improve insulin sensitivity.\u201d<\/p>\n<p> Fasting for diabetes and severe obesity<\/p>\n<p>However, Dr Jamnadas emphasises that those with more severe metabolic conditions may need a more structured plan. \u201cIf a patient is very overweight, or has <a class=\"backlink\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.hindustantimes.com\/topic\/diabetes\" data-vars-page-type=\"story\" data-vars-link-type=\"Manual\" data-vars-anchor-text=\"diabetes\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">diabetes<\/a>, and the goal is to reverse diabetes or lose around 60 pounds, then those patients have special needs,\u201d he explains. \u201cFor them, I will take them to a 48-hour fast once a week.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>He adds, \u201cSometimes I\u2019ll go to a three-day water fast every nine days.
