It was a miserable return to Liverpool for Trent Alexander-Arnold<\/a>, who received a one-star rating alongside two Real Madrid<\/a> superstars.<\/p>\n

The Reds overcame the Liga giants at Anfield on Tuesday evening, being outplayed for large periods and having Thibaut Courtois to thank for keeping them in the game.<\/p>\n

For Alexander-Arnold, it was not the homecoming that he would have hoped for, only coming on as a late substitute and being booed throughout.<\/p>\n

The 27-year-old has made a slow start to life at Madrid and it\u2019s fair to say his cameo wasn\u2019t rated by the Spanish media.<\/p>\n

In their post-match player ratings, Mundo Deportivo<\/a> gave Alexander-Arnold a paltry one-star score, but he wasn\u2019t the only player in that boat.<\/p>\n

Both Vinicius Jr and Kylian Mbappe suffered the same fate, with the former kept quiet by the excellent Conor Bradley<\/a> all night.<\/p>\n

In fact, Courtois and Alvaro Carreras were the only players who got more than a one-star rating, with the Belgian rightly topping the pile with a three.<\/p>\n

Writing for the same publication, Mario Calderon<\/a> accused Mbappe of going \u201cmissing\u201d in the first half, failing to turn up after a great start to the season.<\/p>\n

Marca<\/a> were praiseworthy of Conor Bradley<\/a>\u2018s performance up against Vinicius, saying his marking of him was \u201cparticularly striking\u201d and that the Madrid winger \u201ccouldn\u2019t get past\u201d him once.<\/p>\n

Meanwhile, AS<\/a> journalist Jose Felix Diaz claimed that Madrid\u2019s \u201ccompetitive level hasn\u2019t evolved\u201d under Xabi Alonso compared to Carlo Ancelotti at Anfield last season.<\/p>\n

He also added that that is especially the case regarding \u201cthe players\u2019 attitude with and without the ball,\u201d not working hard enough to silence the Liverpool crowd.<\/p>\n

Cadena Ser<\/a> went down a similar route with their criticism, targeting Jude Bellingham for his lack of work ethic out of possession:<\/p>\n

\u201cThey struggle to defend aerial balls because other players like Jude Bellingham and Kylian Mbappe don\u2019t track back to cover them.\u201d<\/p>\n

It wasn\u2019t only the players who received flak, however, with former Liverpool midfielder Alonso\u2019s tactics questioned by Sport<\/a>.<\/p>\n<\/p>\n

They said that Madrid were guilty of \u201ccomplacency\u201d throughout, \u201cforgetting to press after the 20-minute mark and letting themselves be dictated by Arne Slot<\/a>\u2018s tactics.\u201d<\/p>\n

They also felt that while the team needed to look at themselves for on-pitch errors, the \u201csubstitutions are and will be the responsibility of the coach.\u201d<\/p>\n

All in all, this was far from the night that Alexander-Arnold and Alonso dreamed of returning to their former club, with Madrid lacking quality all night.<\/p>\n
