\n \u201cVibe coding<\/a>,\u201d a form of software development that involves turning natural language into computer code by using artificial intelligence (AI), has been named Collins Dictionary\u2019s Word of the Year<\/a> for 2025.\n <\/p>\n

\n Overall, terms that describe humans\u2019 relationship with technology feature prominently on this year\u2019s list.\n <\/p>\n

\n Although obviously two words, \u201cvibe coding\u201d was chosen by the UK-published dictionary at a time when AI plays an increasing role in our daily lives.\n <\/p>\n

\n As Collins\u2019<\/a> definition states, \u201cvibe coding\u201d is \u201cthe use of artificial intelligence prompted by natural language to assist with the writing of computer code.\u201d Or, as a blog post<\/a> on the dictionary\u2019s website explains: \u201cBasically, telling a machine what you want rather than painstakingly coding it yourself.\u201d\n <\/p>\n

\n The term was coined by AI pioneer Andrej Karpathy, former director of AI at Tesla and founding engineer at OpenAI, to describe creating an app with the help of AI while being able to \u201cforget that the code even exists.\u201d\n <\/p>\n

\n Lexicographers at Collins Dictionary monitor the Collins Corpus, a database of 24 billion words that draws from a range of sources including social media. They used this information to compile the annual list of new and notable words.\n <\/p>\n

\n \u201cThe selection of \u2018vibe coding\u2019 as Collins\u2019 Word of the Year perfectly captures how language is evolving alongside technology,\u201d Alex Beecroft, managing director of Collins, said in a press release Thursday.\n <\/p>\n

\n \u201cIt signals a major shift in software development, where AI is making coding more accessible. The seamless integration of human creativity and machine intelligence demonstrates how natural language is fundamentally changing our interaction with computers.\u201d\n <\/p>\n

\n \u201cVibe coding\u201d was not the only tech-related term to make the shortlist. \u201cClanker\u201d is another one, though it takes a far less rosy view of AI. That word, in British English, is a derogatory term for a robot, computer or a type of AI, originating from \u201cStar Wars: The Clone Wars.\u201d\n <\/p>\n

\n \u201cBroligarchy,\u201d which refers to a small clique of very wealthy men with political influence, also saw greater usage, Collins said. The dictionary\u2019s publisher cited Mark Zuckerberg, Jeff Bezos, Elon Musk and Sundar Pichai, who were high-profile attendees of US President Donald Trump\u2019s inauguration this year, as examples.\n <\/p>\n

\n Someone not quite as wealthy as these tech bros may be labeled \u201cHenry,\u201d another of the shortlisted words, which is an acronym for \u201chigh earner, not rich yet.\u201d\n <\/p>\n

\n Other work-related terms that made it onto the shortlist were \u201ctaskmasking\u201d and \u201cmicro-retirement.\u201d The former is defined as \u201cthe act of giving a false impression that one is being productive in the workplace,\u201d while the latter is a \u201cbreak taken between periods of employment in order to pursue personal interests.\u201d\n <\/p>\n

\n Another way to improve your quality of life is through \u201cbiohacking,\u201d which involves \u201caltering the natural processes of one\u2019s body in an attempt to improve one\u2019s health and longevity.\u201d\n <\/p>\n

\n Taking a \u201ccoolcation\u201d is less about showing off on social media and more about the environment, as the dictionary defines it as \u201ca holiday in a place with a cool climate\u201d \u2013 usually taken to get away from soaring temperatures back home.\n <\/p>\n

\n Other terms that have been widely searched for this year have been \u201cglaze,\u201d which can mean \u201cto praise or flatter someone excessively or undeservedly,\u201d and \u201caura farming,\u201d which describes a deliberate effort to cultivate \u201ca distinctive and charismatic persona.\u201d\n <\/p>\n

\n The dictionary\u2019s Word of the Year in 2024 was \u201cbrat\u201d \u2013 someone \u201ccharacterized by a confident, independent, and hedonistic attitude,\u201d though it can also have another, less positive meaning in British English.
