When it\u2019s time to turn up the gas, we will.\u201d\n<\/p>\n<p>\n\tFrom there, Day touched on nearly every phase of the program \u2014 from Ohio State\u2019s practice habits and in-game adjustments,\u00a0 Julian Sayin\u2019s mobility and the growing confidence in Larry Johnson\u2019s defensive line room. He also reiterated that the Buckeyes\u2019 mindset remains anything but ordinary: \u201cWhat we\u2019re chasing is not normal.\u201d\n<\/p>\n<p>\n\tFollowing Day\u2019s appearance, former Purdue tight end Max Klare joined Paul Keels and Jim Lachey to discuss the Buckeyes and Boilermakers.\n<\/p>\n<p>\tRyan Day<\/p>\n<p>\tOn practice this week<\/p>\n<p>\t\t\u201cIt\u2019s been good.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\t\tDay said the wind was around 15 mph at practice on Tuesday and Wednesday with gusts up to 35 mph. \u201cGood to see us kind of handle that.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\t\t\u201cTuesday, Wednesday, now we got to have a great Thursday.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\tOn Ohio State\u2019s practice habits<\/p>\n<p>\t\t\u201cWhat we\u2019re chasing is not normal.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\t\t\u201cIf we\u2019re acting normal like everybody else, then something is wrong. This is something you have to chase.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\t\t\u201cWhen you come watch practice, it should look like the best practice in the country.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\t\t\u201cI feel like when I\u2019m out there coaching and someone comes to watch practice, they should watch the best coach in America, the best 3-tech in the country, the best slot receiver \u2014 that\u2019s our job every day.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\t\t\u201cThe guys have embraced that. They understand that.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\tOn Ohio State\u2019s in-game adjustments<\/p>\n<p>\t\tDay wishes he hadn\u2019t revealed that Ohio State drew up the play that led to Julian Sayin\u2019s second deep ball to Carnell Tate at halftime. \u201cI knew that would get a lot of attention. I don\u2019t know why I said anything. But it\u2019s fine.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\t\tDay said using iPads on the sidelines has helped Ohio State make in-game adjustments.<\/p>\n<p>\t\tDay said Ohio State\u2019s players have great focus and attention to detail on the sidelines during games.<\/p>\n<p>\tOn Ohio State having urgency<\/p>\n<p>\t\t\u201cWe challenge the guys all the time to have urgency.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\t\t\u201cWe\u2019re getting to our ninth game and feel like we just started.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\t\t\u201cWe just keep challenging those guys to just keep pushing.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\t\tDay said the coaches emphasize the message \u201cIt\u2019s gonna come, you got to believe in that.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\tOn Ohio State\u2019s depth at center<\/p>\n<p>\t\t\u201cWe like to have at least four or five who know how to do it.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\t\tDay said Carson Hinzman, Josh Padilla, Luke Montgomery, Jake Cook and Isaiah Kema are the five who Ohio State feels confident in to snap the football.<\/p>\n<p>\t\tDay said Ohio State constantly works on snapping the football, both under center and in the shotgun.<\/p>\n<p>\tOn Julian Sayin\u2019s mobility<\/p>\n<p>\t\t\u201cHe\u2019s got good short-area quickness.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\t\t\u201cYou can see him move well in the pocket, out of the pocket.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\t\t\u201cThat\u2019s helpful because not everything is gonna go exactly according to plan.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\tOn Ohio State\u2019s halftime adjustments against Penn State<\/p>\n<p>\t\t\u201cThere was no panic with anybody at halftime, including the defense.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\t\t\u201cI thought some of the adjustments we made were really well done and put on the film by the players.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\t\tDay said Ohio State played \u201cviolent\u201d and \u201cphysical\u201d in the second half.<\/p>\n<p>\tOn Ohio State\u2019s defensive tackles<\/p>\n<p>\t\t\u201cI think Larry, just as the season has gone on, has really, with that group, built a mindset and a mentality. I think it\u2019s growing each weke.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\t\t\u201cThey know the run that we need to go on here and what we need to do.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\t\t\u201cI think there\u2019s confidence in there right now. There\u2019s a chippiness, a toughness.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\t\tDay said Ohio State has to stop the run each week.<\/p>\n<p>\t\t\u201cIt\u2019s been contagious. It\u2019s been good.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\tOn Ohio State\u2019s offensive game plan<\/p>\n<p>\t\t\u201cEfficiency is what we\u2019re after.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\t\t\u201cWhen you\u2019re efficient and you\u2019re playing like that, a three-score game can feel way out of reach where I feel like maybe in the past it was like, \u2018OK we\u2019re just getting started on the game.\u2019\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\t\t\u201cThat\u2019s how you control the game.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\t\t\u201cWhen it\u2019s time to turn up the gas, we will.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\tOn Ohio State\u2019s running backs<\/p>\n<p>\t\tDay said Ohio State\u2019s running backs have shown they can be pass catchers out of the backfield.<\/p>\n<p>\t\tDay said Ohio State will need the running backs to be pass-catching threats, just like TreVeyon Henderson and Quinshon Judkins were in the College Football Playoff last season.<\/p>\n<p>\tOn Ohio State\u2019s versatility on offense<\/p>\n<p>\t\tDay said Ohio State wants to be as versatile as possible on offense. He said the running game can open up the passing game and vice versa.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\t\tDay said Jeremiah Smith continues to draw attention that opens up opportunities for his teammates. Carnell Tate is creating opportunities for others, too.<\/p>\n<p>\t\t\u201cTo me, Carnell is playing as good as anybody in the country at wide receiver right now.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\tOn Purdue<\/p>\n<p>\t\t\u201cSome teams are getting better. I think Purdue is getting better.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\t\t\u201cI think they\u2019re just focused on getting better each week. That\u2019s what\u2019s happening.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\t\t\u201cI think they\u2019re a different team than they were earlier in the season.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\t\t\u201cThey play hard.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\tOn Purdue quarterback Ryan Browne<\/p>\n<p>\t\t\u201cHe\u2019s mobile.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\t\t\u201cHe makes a lot of plays.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\t\tDay said Ohio State has to \u201cbe aware\u201d of Brown\u2019s style of play and not let him hurt them with his legs.<\/p>\n<p>\tOn playing on grass at Ross-Ade Stadium<\/p>\n<p>\t\tDay said he prefers playing on grass. His players may, too, though he can\u2019t confirm.<\/p>\n<p>\t\tDay said Ohio State will practice on grass for most of the week, but can move to the turf practice field when needed.<\/p>\n<p>\t\tDay said grass is easier on the players\u2019 bodies and joints.
