{"id":275951,"date":"2025-11-06T21:40:10","date_gmt":"2025-11-06T21:40:10","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us\/275951\/"},"modified":"2025-11-06T21:40:10","modified_gmt":"2025-11-06T21:40:10","slug":"chinas-tianwen-1-mars-probe-captures-images-of-interstellar-comet-3i-atlas","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us\/275951\/","title":{"rendered":"China&#8217;s Tianwen 1 Mars probe captures images of interstellar comet 3I\/ATLAS"},"content":{"rendered":"<p id=\"cfdce806-73c2-426b-ad4d-8ae4f27dbd6f\">China&#8217;s Tianwen 1 Mars orbiter has imaged the interstellar comet 3I\/ATLAS during its close pass by the Red Planet, aiding global efforts to study the rare interstellar interloper.<\/p>\n<p><a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/astronomy\/comets\/new-interstellar-object-3i-atlas-everything-we-know-about-the-rare-cosmic-visitor\" data-before-rewrite-localise=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/astronomy\/comets\/new-interstellar-object-3i-atlas-everything-we-know-about-the-rare-cosmic-visitor\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">3I\/ATLAS<\/a> is only the third object ever confirmed to have reached our <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/16080-solar-system-planets.html\" data-before-rewrite-localise=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/16080-solar-system-planets.html\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">solar system<\/a> after originating in another planetary system, following <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/oumuamua.html\" data-before-rewrite-localise=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/oumuamua.html\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">&#8216;Oumuamua<\/a> in 2017 and <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/interstellar-comet-borisov-most-pristine-ever\" data-before-rewrite-localise=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/interstellar-comet-borisov-most-pristine-ever\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">2I\/Borisov<\/a> in 2019. This time, space agencies around the world have been looking at any and all ways to study the invading comet, including repurposing spacecraft spread across the solar system.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paywall\" aria-hidden=\"true\">The <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/22562-european-space-agency.html\" data-before-rewrite-localise=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/22562-european-space-agency.html\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">European Space Agency<\/a> and NASA are known to have <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/astronomy\/comets\/european-mars-orbiter-spies-interstellar-comet-3i-atlas-zooming-past-red-planet-photos\" data-before-rewrite-localise=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/astronomy\/comets\/european-mars-orbiter-spies-interstellar-comet-3i-atlas-zooming-past-red-planet-photos\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">pointed their Mars spacecraft<\/a>, including surface rovers, toward the comet when 3I\/ATLAS, which is thought to be <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/astronomy\/asteroids\/astronomers-say-new-interstellar-visitor-3i-atlas-is-very-likely-to-be-the-oldest-comet-we-have-ever-seen\" data-before-rewrite-localise=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/astronomy\/asteroids\/astronomers-say-new-interstellar-visitor-3i-atlas-is-very-likely-to-be-the-oldest-comet-we-have-ever-seen\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">older than our solar system<\/a>, passed by in early October. (Image credit: CNSA)<\/p>\n<p id=\"7ec6db81-e4e2-422f-9879-b83c43ea5adb\">Tianwen 1 used its High-Resolution Imaging Camera (HiRIC) \u2014 somewhat comparable to HiRISE on NASA&#8217;s <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/18320-mars-reconnaissance-orbiter.html\" data-before-rewrite-redirect=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/18320-mars-reconnaissance-orbiter.html&#039;\" data-before-rewrite-localise=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/18320-mars-reconnaissance-orbiter.html\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Mars Reconnaissance Orbiter<\/a> (MRO), but slightly lower resolution \u2014 to capture the comet moving against a stellar backdrop. The operation posed challenges, notably switching from imaging bright planetary surface features from low Mars orbit to tracking, from 18 million miles (28.96 million kilometers) away, a faint comet that&#8217;s moving at 129,800 mph (58 km per second) and is just 3.5 miles (5.6 km) wide.<\/p>\n<p><a id=\"elk-seasonal\" class=\"paywall\" aria-hidden=\"true\" data-url=\"\" href=\"\" target=\"_blank\" referrerpolicy=\"no-referrer-when-downgrade\" data-hl-processed=\"none\"\/><\/p>\n<p id=\"7ec6db81-e4e2-422f-9879-b83c43ea5adb-1\">&#8220;Data acquired by a high-resolution camera was received, processed and displayed by a ground-based application system,&#8221; according to CNSA&#8217;s Nov. 5 <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.cnsa.gov.cn\/n6758823\/n6758838\/c10715343\/content.html\" target=\"_blank\" data-url=\"https:\/\/www.cnsa.gov.cn\/n6758823\/n6758838\/c10715343\/content.html\" referrerpolicy=\"no-referrer-when-downgrade\" data-hl-processed=\"none\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">statement<\/a>. &#8220;The images clearly show the comet&#8217;s distinctive features, consisting of a nucleus and a surrounding coma, with a diameter reaching several thousand kilometers.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p id=\"815aef40-b8f8-4fc2-a44b-7f3d068e6ad9\">CNSA says the comet imaging project was an important extension mission for Tianwen 1, stating that the ability to observe faint celestial bodies provided a chance to perform useful technical tests and accumulate experience for the second mission in China&#8217;s deep-space exploration series, <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/astronomy\/asteroids\/chinas-tianwen-2-asteroid-sampling-spacecraft-snaps-a-selfie-with-earth\" data-before-rewrite-localise=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/astronomy\/asteroids\/chinas-tianwen-2-asteroid-sampling-spacecraft-snaps-a-selfie-with-earth\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Tianwen 2<\/a>, which launched in May and is on its way to sample a near-Earth <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/51-asteroids-formation-discovery-and-exploration.html\" data-before-rewrite-localise=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/51-asteroids-formation-discovery-and-exploration.html\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">asteroid<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Tianwen 1 is China&#8217;s first planetary exploration mission. It launched in July 2020 and entered Mars orbit in February 2021.
