Critics have weighed in on the new Hulu show All\u2019s Fair with Kim Kardashian<\/a> \u2014 and they\u2019re anything but delighted. Ryan Murphy\u2019s new legal drama about an all-female divorce firm \u2014 which stars Kardashian alongside acting powerhouses like Naomi Watts, Glenn Close, Niecy Nash and Sarah Paulson \u2014\u00a0debuted on Nov. 4 with a three-episode premiere. Since then, it has received a 6% fresh rating on Rotten Tomatoes<\/a> and plenty of scathing criticism.<\/p>\n

Anthony Hemingway, who directed episodes two, three, four and eight of the series, told the Hollywood Reporter<\/a> that he\u2019s taking the reviews in stride, noting that \u201cyou\u2019re not going to please everybody.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cI think the show holds a mirror up to each person who watches it,\u201d he said. \u201cIt\u2019s just about: Can you connect to it or relate to it and see yourself? It may be out of your league, it may not be anything you can connect to, and I think that goes for anything that gets presented on screen.\u201d<\/p>\n

While All\u2019s Fair is disliked by critics, it\u2019s worth noting that the show\u2019s Popcornmeter rating<\/a>, which reflects how much everyday TV viewers enjoy the show, is significantly higher: It currently sits at 64% after more than 500 ratings.<\/p>\n

But what exactly have the critics said about All\u2019s Fair? Here\u2019s a breakdown.<\/p>\n

The Hollywood Reporter called the show \u2018unforgivably dull\u2019\u00a0<\/p>\n

Angie Han called the show \u201cempty\u201d and \u201cunforgivably dull\u201d in her headline. She wrote in her review for THR<\/a> that the stacked cast did Kardashian a disservice, as it made her performance (described by Han as \u201cstiff and affectless without a single authentic note\u201d) appear weaker.<\/p>\n

Han also criticized the show\u2019s dialogue, as \u201cwhen the dialogue isn\u2019t so bland it borders on inane\u201d it\u2019s \u201cso extravagantly profane as to be exhausting.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cNot even Paulson, as villainous rival attorney Carrington \u2018Carr\u2019 Lane, can wrap her tongue around a line as over-labored as \u2018I wouldn\u2019t do [that] even if I were penniless and starving on a street corner, forced to blow a priest with chlamydia for a bowl of refried beans,\u2019\u201d Han wrote.<\/p>\n

The Guardian declared the show \u2018so bad it\u2019s not good\u2019\u00a0<\/p>\n

Reviewer Lucy Mangan didn\u2019t mince words when she wrote in her review for the Guardian<\/a> that \u201cthere\u2019s worse, and then there\u2019s All\u2019s Fair,\u201d declaring the new series \u201cfascinatingly, existentially terrible.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cBeyond the embarrassment of the script, there is the embarrassment of the performances; although I take the point that when someone \u2014 in this case, Murphy stalwart Sarah Paulson as psychopathic rival \u2018lady\u2019 lawyer Carrington \u2014 is required to scream \u2018Are you calling me an ugly duckling? So what if I give myself home perms? It\u2019s economical!\u2019, while smashing up her mentor\u2019s office, they are probably not going to be able to give their best,\u201d Mangan wrote.<\/p>\n

Vulture said the show is \u2018satisfying and nausea inducing\u2019\u00a0<\/p>\n

Roxana Hadadi wrote in her review for Vulture<\/a> that the show is \u201cpulp feminism from top to bottom\u201d but admitted she \u201ckept pressing play, my brain submitting to the might of another Ryan Murphy trash-TV spectacle.\u201d She called the show \u201ccotton-candy TV: sticky, airy, and, once it\u2019s all gone, both satisfying and nausea inducing.\u201d<\/p>\n

Still, she wrote that \u201cthere\u2019s no subtlety to All\u2019s Fair\u2019s interest in the problems of the wealthy,\u201d noting that, unlike shows like Sirens, The Better Sister or The Hunting Wives, there\u2019s no \u201cgendered, class-based commentary\u201d layered into the plight of the women on Murphy\u2019s new series.<\/p>\n

\u201cIn fact, it\u2019s hard to tell whether Murphy adores or loathes these women,\u201d Hadadi continued. \u201cThey\u2019re paper dolls dressed up in the ugliest, most expensive outfits you\u2019ve ever seen, adorned with all manner of little hats, veils, scarves, and rings while parroting paper-thin statements about what women deserve.\u201d<\/p>\n

Time wrote that the show is \u2018simply bad\u2019\u00a0<\/p>\n

Time magazine<\/a> reviewer Judy Berman called the show \u201ca girlboss fever dream in which a nine-figure divorce settlement constitutes the ne plus ultra of female empowerment\u201d as well as a \u201clongform commercial for a long list of brands.\u201d<\/p>\n

She also criticized the performances, writing, \u201cYou don\u2019t have to worry about Kardashian holding her own among Close, Nash-Betts, Watts, and the rest. No one\u2019s performance in this show is what you would conventionally describe as good; they match each other in hysteria and shallowness.\u201d<\/p>\n

USA Today called the series the \u2018worst show of the year\u2019\u00a0<\/p>\n

Kelly Lawler of USA Today<\/a> declared the show \u201cembarrassingly terrible,\u201d with \u201cscripts worse than what ChatGPT was spitting out two years ago and acting worse than your local Christmas pageant.\u201d<\/p>\n

She wrote that Close, Watts, Nash and Teyana Taylor, who plays an aspiring lawyer, are \u201csleepwalking through their scenes, each one of them acting somewhat at a distance from the material and each other.\u201d<\/p>\n
