{"id":276234,"date":"2025-11-07T00:55:09","date_gmt":"2025-11-07T00:55:09","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us\/276234\/"},"modified":"2025-11-07T00:55:09","modified_gmt":"2025-11-07T00:55:09","slug":"two-vaquita-calves-offer-flicker-of-hope-for-most-endangered-porpoises-on-earth","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us\/276234\/","title":{"rendered":"Two Vaquita Calves Offer Flicker of Hope for Most Endangered Porpoises on Earth"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"article_pub_date-zPFpJ\">November 6, 2025<\/p>\n<p class=\"article_read_time-ZYXEi\">2 min read<\/p>\n<p>A Flicker of Hope for the World\u2019s Rarest Porpoise<\/p>\n<p>The latest report shows that the estimated number of endangered vaquita porpoises has modestly increased<\/p>\n<p class=\"article_authors-ZdsD4\">By <a class=\"article_authors__link--hwBj\" href=\"https:\/\/www.scientificamerican.com\/author\/ryan-green\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Ryan Green<\/a> edited by <a class=\"article_authors__link--hwBj\" href=\"https:\/\/www.scientificamerican.com\/author\/andrea-gawrylewski\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Andrea Gawrylewski<\/a><\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/11\/vaquita-porpoise.jpg\" alt=\"A vaquita porpoise shown diving beneath water's surface.\"   class=\"lead_image__img-xKODG\" style=\"--w:2400;--h:1461\" fetchpriority=\"high\"\/><\/p>\n<p>A lone vaquita, Phocoena sinus, in the open sea.<\/p>\n<p class=\"\" data-block=\"sciam\/paragraph\">For the first time since researchers have been tracking the vaquita, the estimated number of individuals of this nearly extinct species of porpoise has increased.<\/p>\n<p class=\"\" data-block=\"sciam\/paragraph\">Vaquitas, found only in a 4,000-square-kilometer area of the upper Gulf of California, wedged between Baja California and the Mexican mainland, have been dwindling since a 1997 high of 567 individuals; computer models indicate the population may have <a href=\"https:\/\/www.scientificamerican.com\/blog\/extinction-countdown\/vaquita-porpoise-about-to-go-extinct-only-97-remain\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">decreased by 80 percent<\/a> between 2011 and 2015. Despite projections that they\u2019d be extinct by 2021, the vaquita is persevering.<\/p>\n<p class=\"\" data-block=\"sciam\/paragraph\"><a href=\"https:\/\/seashepherd.org\/vaquita-survey\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">A new survey<\/a> that was conducted over several weeks in September by the Mexican government in collaboration with the nonprofit Sea Shepherd Conservation Society estimates that the population consists of seven to 10 individuals and at least one or two new calves. By purchasing a subscription you are helping to ensure the future of impactful stories about the discoveries and ideas shaping our world today.<\/p>\n<p class=\"\" data-block=\"sciam\/paragraph\">The increase offers \u201ca reason for cautious optimism,\u201d says Catalina L\u00f3pez-Sag\u00e1stegui, a marine biologist and director of the Gulf of California Marine Program at the nonprofit development organization Institute of the Americas, who was not involved in the survey.\u201cIt underscores the urgency of creating the conditions necessary to improve [the vaquita\u2019s] chances of survival.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"\" data-block=\"sciam\/paragraph\">Historically, local shrimp fishers accidentally caught the small porpoises in gill nets, inadvertently killing them. Vaquitas continued to be caught and unintentionally killed when fishers used these nets to target totoaba fish for their swim bladder\u2014the part of a fish that regulates buoyancy\u2014for sale in Chinese black markets. Although gillnets were permanently banned in the Gulf of California in 2017, they continued to be used illegally.<\/p>\n<p class=\"\" data-block=\"sciam\/paragraph\">To confront vaquita declines, in 2019 the Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species established <a href=\"https:\/\/www.scientificamerican.com\/blog\/extinction-countdown\/saving-the-vaquita-new-promises-and-new-threats\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">an agreement to help eliminate supply and demand for totoabas<\/a> and help remove gill nets from the upper Gulf of California. It also established a zero-tolerance area in the vaquita\u2019s range in which fishing is banned, causing a massive uproar from members of the fishing community, who would be forced out of their historical fishing grounds\u2014and often out of their livelihood.<\/p>\n<p class=\"\" data-block=\"sciam\/paragraph\">Among the vaquitas spotted this September were an individual called Frida and her calf.
