Here are the nine supplements experts recommend.\n<\/p>\n<p id=\"mntl-sc-block_9-0\" class=\"comp mntl-sc-block mntl-sc-block-html\"> Exploratory studies have found that <a class=\"recommendation-inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.health.com\/omega-3-fatty-acids-benefits-7510411\" link-destination-recommendation=\"true\" data-component=\"link\" data-source=\"inlineLink\" data-type=\"internalLink\" data-ordinal=\"1\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">omega-3<\/a>, which is found in fish oil capsules, is associated with better memory. It may also be able to help <a href=\"https:\/\/www.health.com\/omega-3-supplement-slower-bioloigcal-aging-8789705\" data-component=\"link\" data-source=\"inlineLink\" data-type=\"internalLink\" data-ordinal=\"2\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">slow biological aging<\/a> when combined with vitamin D and exercise.\n<\/p>\n<p id=\"mntl-sc-block_11-0\" class=\"comp mntl-sc-block mntl-sc-block-html\"> \u201cOmega-3 fatty acids reduce <a class=\"recommendation-inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.health.com\/chronic-inflammation-how-to-know-if-you-have-it-8716462\" link-destination-recommendation=\"true\" data-component=\"link\" data-source=\"inlineLink\" data-type=\"internalLink\" data-ordinal=\"1\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">chronic inflammation<\/a> and support heart and brain health, [as well as] healthy aging,\u201d <a href=\"https:\/\/www.osfhealthcare.org\/providers\/john-rinker-1464637\" data-component=\"link\" data-source=\"inlineLink\" data-type=\"externalLink\" data-ordinal=\"2\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">John Rinker, MD<\/a>, internal medicine physician at OSF HealthCare, told Health.\n<\/p>\n<p id=\"mntl-sc-block_13-0\" class=\"comp mntl-sc-block mntl-sc-block-html\"> Fish oil capsules themselves have also been linked to lower rates of cardiovascular disease, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bumc.bu.edu\/camed\/profile\/thomas-perls\/\" data-component=\"link\" data-source=\"inlineLink\" data-type=\"externalLink\" data-ordinal=\"1\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Thomas Perls, MD, MPH<\/a>, professor of medicine at the Boston University Chobanian &amp; Avedisian School of Medicine and director of the New England Centenarian Study, told Health. However, research is mixed.<\/p>\n<p id=\"mntl-sc-block_15-0\" class=\"comp mntl-sc-block mntl-sc-block-html\"> Who should take it: Most people over 40 can take 1-2 grams of omega-3 fish oil capsules per day, Rinker said. Just be sure to avoid high doses if you\u2019re taking a blood thinner, <a href=\"https:\/\/kienvuu.com\/about\/\" data-component=\"link\" data-source=\"inlineLink\" data-type=\"externalLink\" data-ordinal=\"1\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Kien Vuu, MD<\/a>, author and performance and longevity medicine consultant, told Health.<\/p>\n<p id=\"mntl-sc-block_18-0\" class=\"comp mntl-sc-block mntl-sc-block-html\"> <a class=\"recommendation-inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.health.com\/vitamin-d-and-vitamin-k2-8739669\" link-destination-recommendation=\"true\" data-component=\"link\" data-source=\"inlineLink\" data-type=\"internalLink\" data-ordinal=\"1\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Vitamin D3 and K2<\/a> are often combined into one supplement because they work together in a very specific way, and are \u201ccritical for immune balance, bone health, and vascular strength,\u201d Vuu said.<\/p>\n<p>Also known as cholecalciferol, \u201c<a class=\"recommendation-inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.health.com\/vitamin-d3-benefits-11710006\" link-destination-recommendation=\"true\" data-component=\"link\" data-source=\"inlineLink\" data-type=\"internalLink\" data-ordinal=\"2\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">vitamin D3<\/a> is necessary for calcium absorption for bone and muscle strength,\u201d <a href=\"https:\/\/www.lifespanmedicine.com\/our-team\" data-component=\"link\" data-source=\"inlineLink\" data-type=\"externalLink\" data-ordinal=\"3\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Chris Renna, DO<\/a>, family medicine physician and founder of LifeSpan Medicine, told Health. It can also support immune function and create healthy skin, he said.\n<\/p>\n<p id=\"mntl-sc-block_20-0\" class=\"comp mntl-sc-block mntl-sc-block-html\"> Meanwhile, <a class=\"recommendation-inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.health.com\/vitamin-k2-8640438\" link-destination-recommendation=\"true\" data-component=\"link\" data-source=\"inlineLink\" data-type=\"internalLink\" data-ordinal=\"1\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">vitamin K2<\/a> is used to make proteins involved in blood clotting and bone metabolism. Plus, it may help prevent the buildup of minerals in your arteries.\n<\/p>\n<p id=\"mntl-sc-block_22-0\" class=\"comp mntl-sc-block mntl-sc-block-html\"> Who should take it: Supplements containing both vitamins D3 and K2 are specifically helpful for people over 50, Rinker said. But people should use caution if they\u2019re taking Warfarin, or if they have existing calcium disorders or kidney dysfunction, he said.\n<\/p>\n<p id=\"mntl-sc-block_25-0\" class=\"comp mntl-sc-block mntl-sc-block-html\"> There are eight types of <a class=\"recommendation-inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.health.com\/vitamin-b-types-7568850\" link-destination-recommendation=\"true\" data-component=\"link\" data-source=\"inlineLink\" data-type=\"internalLink\" data-ordinal=\"1\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">B vitamins<\/a>, and each one plays a crucial role in your health. They help with metabolism, DNA production, and immune system function, and can \u201cprotect neural pathways and enhance energy,\u201d said Vuu.\n<\/p>\n<p id=\"mntl-sc-block_27-0\" class=\"comp mntl-sc-block mntl-sc-block-html\"> For older adults, deficiencies in vitamin B can contribute to health issues such as cardiovascular disease, <a class=\"recommendation-inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.health.com\/stroke-overview-7254292\" link-destination-recommendation=\"true\" data-component=\"link\" data-source=\"inlineLink\" data-type=\"internalLink\" data-ordinal=\"1\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">stroke<\/a>, cognitive disorders, mental health issues, and more.\n<\/p>\n<p id=\"mntl-sc-block_29-0\" class=\"comp mntl-sc-block mntl-sc-block-html\"> Researchers have suggested that <a class=\"recommendation-inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.health.com\/vitamin-b12-7252832\" link-destination-recommendation=\"true\" data-component=\"link\" data-source=\"inlineLink\" data-type=\"internalLink\" data-ordinal=\"1\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">vitamin B12<\/a>, in particular, may be involved in aging at the cellular level, but evidence is still\u00a0preliminary.\n<\/p>\n<p id=\"mntl-sc-block_31-0\" class=\"comp mntl-sc-block mntl-sc-block-html\"> Who should take it: If bloodwork shows that you have low vitamin B levels, your doctor might recommend you take a complex supplement once daily.\n<\/p>\n<p id=\"mntl-sc-block_34-0\" class=\"comp mntl-sc-block mntl-sc-block-html\"> While most people take <a href=\"https:\/\/www.health.com\/magnesium-7229399\" data-component=\"link\" data-source=\"inlineLink\" data-type=\"internalLink\" data-ordinal=\"1\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">magnesium<\/a> to improve sleep or reduce stress, experts said it could help with healthy aging, too.\n<\/p>\n<p id=\"mntl-sc-block_36-0\" class=\"comp mntl-sc-block mntl-sc-block-html\"> <a class=\"recommendation-inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.health.com\/nutrition\/magnesium-deficiency\" link-destination-recommendation=\"true\" data-component=\"link\" data-source=\"inlineLink\" data-type=\"internalLink\" data-ordinal=\"1\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Magnesium deficiency<\/a> has been linked to increased chronic inflammation and other concerning cellular changes, which may raise people&#8217;s risk of conditions such as heart disease, cancer, and <a class=\"recommendation-inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.health.com\/condition\/alzheimers-overview\" link-destination-recommendation=\"true\" data-component=\"link\" data-source=\"inlineLink\" data-type=\"internalLink\" data-ordinal=\"2\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Alzheimer\u2019s disease<\/a>.\n<\/p>\n<p id=\"mntl-sc-block_38-0\" class=\"comp mntl-sc-block mntl-sc-block-html\"> Plus, low levels of magnesium can also mess with your sleep, which is connected to longevity.\n<\/p>\n<p id=\"mntl-sc-block_40-0\" class=\"comp mntl-sc-block mntl-sc-block-html\"> Who should take it:\u00a0\u201cMagnesium typically helps most adults, especially those with a deficiency,\u201d Rinker said. That can be\u00a0diagnosed with a blood test. There are many different types and formulations of magnesium supplements, and a healthcare provider can help you choose which one might work best.\n<\/p>\n<p id=\"mntl-sc-block_43-0\" class=\"comp mntl-sc-block mntl-sc-block-html\"> <a class=\"recommendation-inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.health.com\/coq10-7100367\" link-destination-recommendation=\"true\" data-component=\"link\" data-source=\"inlineLink\" data-type=\"internalLink\" data-ordinal=\"1\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Coenzyme Q10<\/a>, or CoQ10, is an antioxidant that\u2019s abundant in the body. It also helps with mitochondrial function, where it provides energy for cell growth. This is \u201cvital to high-energy-demanding organs like our brain, heart, and skeletal muscle,\u201d Renna explained.\n<\/p>\n<p id=\"mntl-sc-block_45-0\" class=\"comp mntl-sc-block mntl-sc-block-html\"> As you age, your CoQ10 levels naturally decline. But research suggests taking CoQ10 supplements may help reduce inflammation, support heart health, and protect cells from damage called <a class=\"recommendation-inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.health.com\/oxidative-stress-8661281\" link-destination-recommendation=\"true\" data-component=\"link\" data-source=\"inlineLink\" data-type=\"internalLink\" data-ordinal=\"1\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">oxidative stress<\/a>.\n<\/p>\n<p id=\"mntl-sc-block_47-0\" class=\"comp mntl-sc-block mntl-sc-block-html\"> Who should take it: Some research suggests CoQ10 could lower \u201cblood pressure and blood sugar, which may not be helpful to some people taking medicine prescribed to do those same things,\u201d said Renna.\n<\/p>\n<p id=\"mntl-sc-block_50-0\" class=\"comp mntl-sc-block mntl-sc-block-html\"> According to Vuu, <a class=\"recommendation-inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.health.com\/reasons-to-add-more-fiber-to-your-diet-11805319\" link-destination-recommendation=\"true\" data-component=\"link\" data-source=\"inlineLink\" data-type=\"internalLink\" data-ordinal=\"1\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">fiber<\/a> supports your gut barrier\u2019s integrity and calms chronic inflammation. It\u2019s also been associated with a lower risk of all-cause mortality, as well as a lower risk of death from cardiovascular disease or cancer.\n<\/p>\n<p id=\"mntl-sc-block_52-0\" class=\"comp mntl-sc-block mntl-sc-block-html\"> Who should take it: The vast majority of Americans don\u2019t get <a href=\"https:\/\/www.health.com\/how-much-fiber-you-need-every-day-to-stay-healthy-11821832\" data-component=\"link\" data-source=\"inlineLink\" data-type=\"internalLink\" data-ordinal=\"1\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">enough fiber<\/a> each day. If you struggle to hit your goals, daily fiber supplements containing <a class=\"recommendation-inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.health.com\/psyllium-husk-benefits-7495040\" link-destination-recommendation=\"true\" data-component=\"link\" data-source=\"inlineLink\" data-type=\"internalLink\" data-ordinal=\"2\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">psyllium<\/a> (Metamucil) or wheat dextrin (Benefiber) could help improve your gut and immune health as you age.\n<\/p>\n<p id=\"mntl-sc-block_55-0\" class=\"comp mntl-sc-block mntl-sc-block-html\"> As you age, your bones get weaker. This increases the risk of conditions like osteoporosis, and in turn, bone fractures.\n<\/p>\n<p id=\"mntl-sc-block_57-0\" class=\"comp mntl-sc-block mntl-sc-block-html\"> <a class=\"recommendation-inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.health.com\/calcium-8558241\" link-destination-recommendation=\"true\" data-component=\"link\" data-source=\"inlineLink\" data-type=\"internalLink\" data-ordinal=\"1\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Calcium supplements<\/a> may help prevent this. The mineral has been linked to improved bone strength and bone density.\n<\/p>\n<p id=\"mntl-sc-block_59-0\" class=\"comp mntl-sc-block mntl-sc-block-html\"> Who should take it: Most people don&#8217;t get enough calcium, and a supplement can be helpful if you struggle to get enough in your diet. It could \u201calso help with inflammation and joint health,\u201d he added.\n<\/p>\n<p id=\"mntl-sc-block_64-0\" class=\"comp mntl-sc-block mntl-sc-block-html\"> Some evidence suggests that creatine supplementation for older adults can enhance memory, though more research is needed.\n<\/p>\n<p id=\"mntl-sc-block_66-0\" class=\"comp mntl-sc-block mntl-sc-block-html\"> Who should take it: Most creatine comes in powder form that\u2019s mixed into beverages, and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.health.com\/best-time-to-take-creatine-8705354\" data-component=\"link\" data-source=\"inlineLink\" data-type=\"internalLink\" data-ordinal=\"1\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">it can be taken anytime<\/a>. One study suggested curcumin may have a positive effect against neurodegenerative diseases, cognitive decline, and sarcopenia. Another review found that taking curcumin extract may be able to relieve knee pain from osteoarthritis.\n<\/p>\n<p id=\"mntl-sc-block_73-0\" class=\"comp mntl-sc-block mntl-sc-block-html\"> Who should take it: Oral turmeric supplements are popular and could be beneficial for people with inflammatory conditions, Rinker said. &#8220;But it&#8217;s advisable to exercise caution if you have <a class=\"recommendation-inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.health.com\/condition\/digestive-health\/gallstone-symptoms\" link-destination-recommendation=\"true\" data-component=\"link\" data-source=\"inlineLink\" data-type=\"internalLink\" data-ordinal=\"1\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">gallstones<\/a> or [gastrointestinal] sensitivity,&#8221; he added.<\/p>\n<p id=\"mntl-sc-block_76-0\" class=\"comp mntl-sc-block mntl-sc-block-html\"> Supplements alone cannot replace a healthy lifestyle\u2014to live longer and healthier, it&#8217;s crucial to:\n<\/p>\n<p>Eat nutritious food<br \/>\nExercise<br \/>\n<a class=\"recommendation-inline-link-ai\" href=\"https:\/\/www.health.com\/stress-management-8551051\" link-destination-recommendation-ai=\"true\" data-component=\"link\" data-source=\"inlineLink\" data-type=\"internalLink\" data-ordinal=\"1\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Manage stress<\/a><br \/>\nConnect with others<br \/>\nAttend regular checkups with your doctor<\/p>\n<p id=\"mntl-sc-block_80-0\" class=\"comp mntl-sc-block mntl-sc-block-html\"> \u201cSupplements are meant to amplify, not replace, other activities,\u201d said Rinker. \u201cI would really view supplements as the cherry on top, assuming you are doing all of those other lifestyle changes.\u201d\n<\/p>\n<p id=\"mntl-sc-block_82-0\" class=\"comp mntl-sc-block mntl-sc-block-html\"> Also, keep in mind that the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) does not regulate supplements in the same way that it does foods and medications.\n<\/p>\n<p id=\"mntl-sc-block_84-0\" class=\"comp mntl-sc-block mntl-sc-block-html\"> Check with your doctor about which formulations to purchase,\u00a0and \u201clook for independent third-party testing such as <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nsf.org\/\" data-component=\"link\" data-source=\"inlineLink\" data-type=\"externalLink\" data-ordinal=\"1\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">National Sanitation Foundation<\/a> (NSF) and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.usp.org\/\" data-component=\"link\" data-source=\"inlineLink\" data-type=\"externalLink\" data-ordinal=\"2\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">United States Pharmacopeia<\/a> (USP)\u201d labels on the bottles, said Rinker.\n<\/p>\n<p id=\"mntl-sc-block_87-0\" class=\"comp mntl-sc-block mntl-sc-block-html\"> Taking supplements cannot guarantee that you\u2019ll live longer.
