Billionaires from Elon Musk to Jeff Bezos<\/a> are racing to define humanity\u2019s next frontier: space. Both are betting big that interplanetary travel will happen<\/a> in their lifetime, and now, one of Musk\u2019s closest allies could soon lead NASA itself.<\/p>\n

Jared Isaacman<\/a>, self-made billionaire and founder of Shift4 Payments<\/a>, was renominated this week to lead NASA\u2014a move that could shape the future of American space exploration.<\/p>\n

Isaacman founded his payment processing company in 1999 at just 16 years old. Since then, he\u2019s become one of SpaceX\u2019s most prominent private astronauts, leading two missions to orbit aboard Musk\u2019s rockets.<\/p>\n

Originally nominated by President Donald Trump last December, Isaacman\u2019s confirmation was derailed<\/a> in June following a public clash with Musk. But Trump\u2019s decision to renominate him Tuesday signals a renewed push to put a results-driven outsider at the helm of the 67-year-old agency.<\/p>\n

According to a 62-page transition plan authored by Isaacman and obtained by Bloomberg<\/a>, his vision for NASA<\/a> is ambitious\u2014reinvigorating lunar missions, expanding partnerships with academic institutions and the private sector, and streamlining internal bureaucracy.\u00a0<\/p>\n

One of his priorities includes ending a culture that can bog down organizations: endless meetings.<\/p>\n

Under Isaacman\u2019s proposed rules, NASA meetings would be capped at one hour, scheduled in 15-minute increments, and limited to about 10 attendees. Any gathering with more than 20 participants would require his personal approval. Recurring meetings that could simply be an email update? Canceled.<\/p>\n

And if a meeting must happen, attendees are expected to be fully present\u2014no multitasking allowed. In fact, once your role in a meeting is complete, there\u2019s no need to stay until the gathering is complete.<\/p>\n

The changes reflect a desire to \u201cliberate the agency from needless inefficiencies\u201d and \u201cfoster a culture of urgent execution,\u201d according to the plan.<\/p>\n

Business leaders have a bone to pick with meetings<\/p>\n

Whether Isaacman is confirmed to lead NASA is now in the hands of the U.S. Senate, but he\u2019s not alone in his frustration with how meetings can bog down organizations.\u00a0<\/p>\n

In recent months, JPMorgan Chase<\/a> CEO Jamie Dimon<\/a> has echoed his disdain for unproductive meetings. Speaking at Fortune\u2019s Most Powerful Women summit in October, the banking executive said he comes to meetings fully prepared and expects the same of others\u2014no distractions allowed.<\/p>\n

\u201cNone of this nodding off, none of this reading my mail,\u201d Dimon told Fortune\u2019s Alyson Shontell. \u201cIf you have an iPad in front of me and it looks like you\u2019re reading your email or getting notifications, I tell you to close the damn thing. It\u2019s disrespectful.\u201d<\/p>\n

Similarly, IBM<\/a> CEO Arvind Krishna<\/a> recently told CNN<\/a> that small meetings demand full focus\u2014or they\u2019re a waste of time.<\/p>\n

\u201cIf it\u2019s a small meeting, I would really frown upon if somebody is sitting opposite my desk and lost in their phone, I would tell them, \u2018why don\u2019t you come back when you have time?\u2019\u201d he said.<\/p>\n

Research backs up their frustration. A study<\/a> by a University of North Carolina Charlotte professor, in partnership with Otter.ai, found that professionals spend more one-third of their working hours in meetings\u2014and 46% say too many of them are unnecessary.<\/p>\n

Who is Jared Isaacman?<\/p>\n

Isaacman was born in New Jersey, but dropped out of high school by age 15, later earning his GED. He has described himself as a \u201chorrible student,\u201d as seen in Netflix\u2019s Countdown: Inspiration4 Mission to Space.\u00a0<\/p>\n

After finding success with Shift4 Payments\u2014now valued at roughly $6 billion\u2014 Isaacman turned his fascination with flight into action. He began taking flying lessons in 2004, and five years later, set a world record for circumnavigating the globe.\u00a0<\/p>\n

In 2021, he commanded Inspiration4, the world\u2019s first all-civilian mission to space that helped raise over $240 million for St. Jude Children\u2019s Research Hospital. Last year, he led Polaris<\/a> Dawn, becoming the first private citizen to perform a spacewalk<\/a>.<\/p>\n

Isaacman\u2019s also the founder of Draken International, a defense firm that supplies tactical fighter aircraft training to the U.S. military and its allies.\u00a0<\/p>\n
