{"id":277295,"date":"2025-11-07T13:20:09","date_gmt":"2025-11-07T13:20:09","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us\/277295\/"},"modified":"2025-11-07T13:20:09","modified_gmt":"2025-11-07T13:20:09","slug":"the-artist-luke-jerram-on-the-tree-planting-project-hell-never-see-finished-art","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us\/277295\/","title":{"rendered":"The artist Luke Jerram on the tree-planting project he\u2019ll never see finished | Art"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">Luke Jerram, whose art installations have travelled the world, is philosophical about his latest project bearing fruit beyond his time on Earth.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">Known for his <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/artanddesign\/2008\/mar\/14\/art\" data-link-name=\"in body link\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Play Me I\u2019m Yours street pianos project<\/a> and his <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/science\/gallery\/2016\/sep\/02\/the-moons-a-balloon-in-luke-jerrams-museum-of-the-moon-installation-in-pictures\" data-link-name=\"in body link\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Museum of the Moon artwork<\/a> \u2013 a seven-metre diameter sculpture of the moon featuring detailed Nasa imagery of the lunar surface \u2013 Jerram is now working on Echo Wood, a living, breathing installation made of native British trees.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">Planted this winter in Somerset\u2019s Chew Valley, in collaboration with the charity <a href=\"https:\/\/avonneedstrees.org.uk\/?_gl=1%2A1xb3adu%2A_up%2AMQ..%2A_gs%2AMQ..&amp;gclid=CjwKCAiAzrbIBhA3EiwAUBaUdTf_Jn2wCeNH7nZUEd4hCgAOdFIAjB8jxqGeRUOlC9OrbxK5naRJKRoCK0UQAvD_BwE&amp;gbraid=0AAAAA-LUSfx-78tsCMwcHk1cbt6bXQXzp\" data-link-name=\"in body link\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Avon Needs Trees<\/a>, the 365 trees \u2013 crabapple, hawthorn and oak \u2013 will slowly grow into a vast 110-metre-wide design and will take a century to fully emerge, long after Jerram is gone.<\/p>\n<p>A mock-up of Echo Wood, which will contain 365 trees in a design that will allow the centre to be used as a creative space. Illustration: Enviral<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">\u201cIn 50 to 100 years I\u2019m not going to be here,\u201d Jerram, 50, says next to a scale model of the project in his studio in Bristol. \u201cI\u2019m at a stage in my career when I\u2019m starting to look forward, I\u2019m not looking back.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">\u201cI\u2019m 50, it might be a midlife crisis. I\u2019m up to 900 exhibitions now. Forty countries around the world and the artworks are in about 80 museums. So you suddenly start thinking about legacy projects and the fact that I can\u2019t keep these levels of energy up.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">\u201cI suppose there\u2019s something quite nice about projecting yourself into a future, which is quite exciting.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">The living sculpture will form part of Lower Chew Forest, which at 422 acres and 100,000 trees, will be one of the biggest new woodlands in <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/uk-news\/england\" data-link-name=\"in body link\" data-component=\"auto-linked-tag\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">England<\/a> when completed.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">Pathways and avenues, blossoming at different times of year, will be created to guide visitors to Echo Wood on a journey through the forest towards a central circular gathering space, formed from 12 English oak trees.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">As with many of his projects, Jerram wants this central space to foster creativity. \u201cIt will form an event space. It can be used for weddings or educational activities, music, poetry, you name it,\u201d he says.<\/p>\n<p>Artwork Echo Wood through the seasons \u2013 video<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">Jerram\u2019s other works, which often touch on themes of nature and the climate emergency, include: Gaia, a seven-metre diameter sculpture of the Earth using Nasa imagery; Helios, a sculpture of the Sun using detailed solar imagery to recreate its surface; and Tipping Point, a simulated forest fire combining smoke, lights and sound.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">Echo Wood is perhaps the closest representation of those themes, a symbol of the fight against climate change. \u201cThis is a way to physically do something about it. Using creativity to inspire the general public, but also to help use trees to raise a bit of money and create a legacy,\u201d Jerram says. \u201cWhat art can do is communicate messages in a different language that can then reach people in a slightly different way.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">\u201cI\u2019m often collaborating with scientists, but also charities on how to communicate their ideas.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">Despite the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/environment\/2025\/oct\/28\/change-course-now-humanity-has-missed-15c-climate-target-says-un-head\" data-link-name=\"in body link\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">concerning lack of progress in tackling the climate crisis<\/a>, Jerram says he is \u201calways hopeful\u201d despite finding \u201cthe breaching of tipping points\u201d frightening.<\/p>\n<p>Jerram is known for his seven-metre sculpture of the Earth, seen here at the Painted Hall in the Royal Naval College in Greenwich, which uses images from Nasa. Photograph: Vickie Flores\/EPA<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">\u201cThere\u2019s this lovely comic illustration of a doctor with a slightly ill looking Earth in front of them on the doctor\u2019s chair,\u201d Jerram says. \u201cThe Earth is saying: \u2018I\u2019m afraid we\u2019ve got a nasty infection of humans at the moment.\u2019 The doctor says: \u2018Don\u2019t worry, it\u2019ll soon pass.\u2019<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">\u201cWe\u2019re just the latest invasive species.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">The wood from his latest artwork will ultimately be sustainably harvested and used for educational and creative projects, before the trees are replanted to then continue the cycle of life.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">\u201cI like the idea of what can you then do with the wood \u2013 turn the oak into playground equipment for the schools in the city, or create a boat, or musical instruments for kids in the city,\u201d Jerram says.<\/p>\n<p>Luke Jerram with his installation Helios at Fountains Abbey in Ripon, North Yorkshire.  Photograph: Danny Lawson\/PA<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\"><a href=\"https:\/\/echo-wood.co.uk\/about\/\" data-link-name=\"in body link\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Companies and individuals are able to sponsor individual trees to raise money for Avon Needs Trees<\/a>, which has a number of tree-planting projects across the region.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">\u201cStood in the heart of a brand new forest, Echo Wood is a symbol of optimism to us and future generations that with some thought, creativity and determination we can meet the climate and nature crises we\u2019re facing,\u201d Dave Wood, the chief executive of Avon Needs Trees, says. \u201cNot quite a message in a bottle but a message in wood, water and sunlight.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">\u201cWe want as many people as possible to be thinking about creative ways to meet the climate and nature crises we\u2019re facing.
