Once you\u2019re ready to go, choose a dumbbell exercise like <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.tomsguide.com\/wellness\/fitness\/i-did-100-reverse-flyes-every-day-for-a-week-heres-what-happened-to-my-body\" data-before-rewrite-localise=\"https:\/\/www.tomsguide.com\/wellness\/fitness\/i-did-100-reverse-flyes-every-day-for-a-week-heres-what-happened-to-my-body\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">reverse flyes<\/a>,<a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.tomsguide.com\/face-off\/bicep-curls-vs-hammer-curls-which-is-best\" data-before-rewrite-localise=\"https:\/\/www.tomsguide.com\/face-off\/bicep-curls-vs-hammer-curls-which-is-best\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\"> curls<\/a>, or triceps kickbacks, for example.<\/p>\n<p>You may like<\/p>\n<p><a id=\"elk-seasonal\" class=\"paywall\" aria-hidden=\"true\" data-url=\"\" href=\"\" target=\"_blank\" referrerpolicy=\"no-referrer-when-downgrade\" data-hl-processed=\"none\"\/><\/p>\n<p id=\"08e02e9c-e700-41f6-b451-01e1864c2603-1\">Next, pick up a weight that you can lift for roughly 5-8 reps, so that the last few reps are tough and close to failure. Once you hit your rep range using the first weight, move straight down to the next set of weights and repeat. Continue moving down the rack, decreasing the load a set of dumbbells at a time.<\/p>\n<p>Repeat until you\u2019ve run the rack and reached the lightest set of weights. You\u2019re aiming to hit near failure (or until form deteriorates) with each set, but by stopping and decreasing the weight, you should be able to continue. You&#8217;ll either reach the end of the rack or hit total failure first.<\/p>\n<p>It might be trial and error, and I&#8217;ve spoken to some people who prefer to base this method on performing as many reps as possible with each weight before moving on.<\/p>\n<p>Here&#8217;s an example:<\/p>\n<p class=\"newsletter-form__strapline\">Get instant access to breaking news, the hottest reviews, great deals and helpful tips.<\/p>\n<p>5-8 reps 12kg5-8 reps 10kg5-8 reps 8kg5-8 reps 6kg5-8 reps 4kg5-8 reps 2kg<\/p>\n<p id=\"61bb635a-3104-45f7-b67f-e2b0a1666bde\">You could use the same rep ranges every set, as above, while others choose to increase the reps as the weights get lighter. For example, you could start with a set of 8 reps, then increase to 10 reps, 12, 15, and so on. This taps into a method called<a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.tomsguide.com\/features\/time-under-tension-what-is-it-and-could-it-help-you-grow-muscle\" data-before-rewrite-localise=\"https:\/\/www.tomsguide.com\/features\/time-under-tension-what-is-it-and-could-it-help-you-grow-muscle\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\"> time under tension<\/a> (TUT), which means your muscles stay stimulated and under contraction for longer, increasing overall volume and helping you build muscle. It\u2019s efficient and minimizes rest while keeping the intensity high, which is why people love it.<\/p>\n<p>I don\u2019t recommend doing this for every exercise in your strength block, just as a finisher for the muscle group you want to max out on most, like your shoulders at the end of an upper-body session. Use it to make that last set leave an impression \u2014 but I would stay away from your big compound lifts and aim for isolation exercises like curls or extensions where you can really zone in on
