This is the second time he will enter the Transfer Portal during his college career, coming after a decision to sit out the remainder of the 2025 season and redshirt.

Dylan Edwards played his high school football at Derby in Kansas. There, he was a four-star recruit in the Class of 2023. He was also the 181st-ranked player nationally and then the 11th-ranked running back in that recruiting class.

Edwards began his career at Colorado in 2023, appearing in 12 games there. However, after the season, he entered the portal and landed at Kansas State. Since then, he’s been a key piece of the Wildcats’ offense.

For his career, Edwards has played in 28 games and rushed for 1,072 yards and eight touchdowns. He’s also caught 58 passes for 449 yards and six touchdowns. This season, he’s been able to play in four games and did miss some time after suffering an injury returning a punt in the Kansas State opener against Iowa State in Dublin. During that time he’s had when healthy in 2025, he’s carried the ball 34 times for 205 yards and two touchdowns. That’s 6.0 yards per carry this season.

That four-game mark this season is important for Dylan Edwards. That’s the maximum number of games a player can appear in and still redshirt for the season. So, it allows him to step away at that point and save a year of eligibility. However, if he were to play five games, stepping away could only prevent further injuries in the second half of the season.

This comes in a season that has been frustrating overall for Kansas State. The Wildcats opened with the Big 12 loss in Dublin to Iowa State, where Edwards was injured. Now, the Wildcats sit at 2-4 overall and 1-2 in Big 12 play.

Changes coming to the NCAA Transfer Portal

There are some major changes coming to the Transfer Portal this year. Those changes are likely part of the thought process moving forward for athletes, including Dylan Edwards.

The decision was made to end the spring portal and make the winter window the only opportunity for players to transfer. However, there are still some questions that do need to be worked out. That includes the exact timing of the winter window. The Division I Football Oversight Committee voted to make that window a 10-day one in January. However, that aspect of the changes wasn’t initially approved by the NCAA Division I Administration Committee. Instead, the Administration Committee has only approved the move to one window so far.

The expectation is now that the winter window sees a large flood of players entering the Transfer Portal. That should, in turn, allow rosters to be more solidified throughout the offseason.

Kansas State Wildcats running back Dylan Edwards plans to enter the NCAA Transfer Portal, On3 has learned.
