{"id":278374,"date":"2025-11-08T01:52:15","date_gmt":"2025-11-08T01:52:15","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us\/278374\/"},"modified":"2025-11-08T01:52:15","modified_gmt":"2025-11-08T01:52:15","slug":"how-creatine-supplementation-may-boost-memory-attention-in-alzheimers-patients","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us\/278374\/","title":{"rendered":"How creatine supplementation may boost memory, attention in Alzheimer\u2019s patients"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"dist__Box-sc-1fnzlkn-0 dist__TextBase-sc-1fnzlkn-3 bYFsJw cuqaEv article-text\">DETROIT \u2013 Creatine has long been a go-to supplement for athletes looking to build muscle and improve recovery. <a href=\"https:\/\/alz-journals.onlinelibrary.wiley.com\/doi\/10.1002\/trc2.70101\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/alz-journals.onlinelibrary.wiley.com\/doi\/10.1002\/trc2.70101\">But new research suggests its benefits may reach far beyond the gym<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dist__Box-sc-1fnzlkn-0 dist__TextBase-sc-1fnzlkn-3 bYFsJw cuqaEv article-text\">Researchers at the University of Kansas Medical Center recently conducted a small pilot study exploring how creatine might affect the brain &#8212; particularly in people living with Alzheimer\u2019s disease.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dist__Box-sc-1fnzlkn-0 dist__TextBase-sc-1fnzlkn-3 bYFsJw cuqaEv article-text\">The study involved 20 participants who took 20 grams of creatine monohydrate daily for eight weeks. Nearly all of them completed the trial, and brain imaging showed an 11% increase in total brain creatine. Participants also demonstrated improvements in memory, attention, and other cognitive functions, <a href=\"https:\/\/alz-journals.onlinelibrary.wiley.com\/doi\/10.1002\/trc2.70101\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/alz-journals.onlinelibrary.wiley.com\/doi\/10.1002\/trc2.70101\">according to the published results<\/a> in the Alzheimer\u2019s &amp; Dementia: Translational Research &amp; Clinical Interventions journal.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dist__Box-sc-1fnzlkn-0 dist__TextBase-sc-1fnzlkn-3 bYFsJw cuqaEv article-text\">Henry Ford Health registered dietitian Ruth Franklin <a href=\"https:\/\/www.henryford.com\/blog\/2025\/10\/do-creatine-supplements-have-benefits\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.henryford.com\/blog\/2025\/10\/do-creatine-supplements-have-benefits\">said the findings are encouraging<\/a> &#8212; but still preliminary.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dist__Box-sc-1fnzlkn-0 dist__TextBase-sc-1fnzlkn-3 bYFsJw cuqaEv article-text\">\u201cThat study found that those patients who were taking creatine had improvement in their cognitive function, their brain health,\u201d Franklin said. \u201cOur body uses about 95% of creatine to go into our muscle cells. After that 95%, there\u2019s still 5% left. Where does that 5% go? It goes to our organs with the most demand, which is our brain.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"dist__Box-sc-1fnzlkn-0 dist__TextBase-sc-1fnzlkn-3 bYFsJw cuqaEv article-text\">Researchers say the results justify larger, controlled studies to confirm the effects of creatine on cognitive function and brain energy metabolism.<\/p>\n<p>From the gym to the brain<\/p>\n<p class=\"dist__Box-sc-1fnzlkn-0 dist__TextBase-sc-1fnzlkn-3 bYFsJw cuqaEv article-text\">At Diligent Fitness in Detroit, owner Carly Britton has been using creatine for years \u2014 not for brain health, but for strength and recovery.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dist__Box-sc-1fnzlkn-0 dist__TextBase-sc-1fnzlkn-3 bYFsJw cuqaEv article-text\">\u201cI use creatine because I lift heavy,\u201d Britton said at her gym in Detroit. \u201cI lift three to four days a week, and so I want to feel nice and recovered after those sessions.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"dist__Box-sc-1fnzlkn-0 dist__TextBase-sc-1fnzlkn-3 bYFsJw cuqaEv article-text\">Britton, who uses 5 grams of creatine monohydrate in powder form before workouts, encourages her mostly female clients to consider creatine, emphasizing that it\u2019s not just for bodybuilders.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dist__Box-sc-1fnzlkn-0 dist__TextBase-sc-1fnzlkn-3 bYFsJw cuqaEv article-text\">\u201cI think when people hear creatine, they automatically think that\u2019s something that only bodybuilders need to do,\u201d Britton said. \u201cAnd so, I try to women, it does not cause the bulk that people think that it does. Creatine is just sort of your battery charger. It helps you go into the gym and work really hard to build the muscle that you\u2019re going to need throughout midlife and beyond.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"dist__Box-sc-1fnzlkn-0 dist__TextBase-sc-1fnzlkn-3 bYFsJw cuqaEv article-text\">Studies show women tend to have lower baseline creatine levels than men, meaning supplementation can have a greater relative effect.
