Doctors and nutritionists know it. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.independent.co.uk\/life-style\/health-and-families\/health-news\/popeye-had-it-right-spinach-really-does-make-you-stronger-2201458.html\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Spinach is a superfood<\/a> with powerful health benefits. <\/p>\n<p>In addition to eye-protecting vitamin A and cramp-preventing vitamin K, the versatile leafy green has more of the essential mineral iron than several kinds of meat and poultry. A cooked cup of spinach has <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.urmc.rochester.edu\/encyclopedia\/content?contenttypeid=76&amp;contentid=11458-1\">6.4 milligrams<\/a>, while duck and pork have <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.dietaryguidelines.gov\/resources\/2020-2025-dietary-guidelines-online-materials\/food-sources-select-nutrients\/food-sources-iron\">under three milligrams or less<\/a> for three ounces.<\/p>\n<p>But if you have low iron levels and are trying to raise them, experts say that nothing beats a cut of steak, chicken or fish. <\/p>\n<p>That\u2019s because spinach has what is known as \u201cnon-heme\u201d iron, which is absorbed by the body at a lower rate than \u201cheme iron\u201d found in meat, fish and poultry. <\/p>\n<p>Non-heme and heme iron are the two types of iron found in food.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/11\/GettyImages-2074993670.jpeg\"  loading=\"lazy\" alt=\"Spinach is a top superfood with major health benefits and multiple crucial vitamins and essential minerals. But those with low iron may not want to rely on the leafy green (Getty Images)<\/p>\n<p>You absorb up to 30 percent of the heme iron you consume, according to the <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.redcrossblood.org\/donate-blood\/blood-donation-process\/before-during-after\/iron-blood-donation\/iron-rich-foods.html\">American Red Cross<\/a>, versus just between 2 and 10 percent of the non-heme iron.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cStudies show that although spinach does contain iron, its non-heme status renders it considerably less accessible for absorption compared to heme iron from animal sources,\u201d <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.mmcivf.com\/blog\/spinach-vs-meat-debunking-the-iron-myth-zivanza-wellness\">Alaska\u2019s Millennium Medical Center says on its website<\/a>. <\/p>\n<p>The ironic truth affecting a quarter of American adults<\/p>\n<p>Iron helps the body make the protein hemoglobin, which is a critical part of the blood cells that carry oxygen to our tissues. Without oxygen, <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/my.clevelandclinic.org\/health\/diseases\/23063-hypoxia\">our organs could suffer damage<\/a>, leading to death.<\/p>\n<p>Yet, iron deficiency plagues around a quarter of American adults, with a 2024 <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nhlbi.nih.gov\/news\/2024\/about-1-4-americans-may-have-inadequate-iron-intake-or-absorption\">study<\/a> finding about 14 percent of more than 8,000 Americans had absolute iron deficiency.<\/p>\n<p>Iron deficiency is a common type of anemia, which is when the blood doesn\u2019t have enough healthy red blood cells.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" a sore or swollen tongue, an increased heart rate, an enlarged spleen and a desire to eat peculiar substances, such as dirt or ice.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe symptoms of iron deficiency can be vague and easily mistaken for other conditions,\u201d <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.henryford.com\/blog\/2024\/07\/the-reason-why-so-many-women-iron-deficient\">said Dr. Alexis Federman<\/a>, an internal medicine specialist at Henry Ford Health. \u201cThat can make it hard to pin down a diagnosis.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Most adult men need just eight milligrams of iron a day to stay healthy, according to <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/ods.od.nih.gov\/factsheets\/Iron-HealthProfessional\/\">federal dietary guidelines<\/a>, while women need 10 more milligrams because of menstruation. <\/p>\n<p>A match made in iron-deficient Heaven<\/p>\n<p>People can reach daily iron goals by relying on a variety of fruits vegetables and protein sources.<\/p>\n<p>Eating non-heme and heme iron foods together will help the iron will be more completely absorbed by your body. <\/p>\n<p>However, you can also still get what you need with a definitely possible to meet your iron needs from plant foods alone, it just takes more planning and intention with the types, amounts and frequency of foods eaten,\u201d advanced sports dietician<a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.gemmasampson.com\/blog\/steak-spinach-iron\">Dr. Gemma Sampson says<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>The good news is that you can enhance non-heme iron absorption from spinach by eating foods that are high in vitamin C with your meal. <\/p>\n<p>Oranges and citrus fruits, melons, strawberries, tomatoes, broccoli or bell peppers can do the trick.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYour daily iron needs can be obtained through your diet, although if you have low blood iron levels or have difficulty absorbing iron, you may need a supplement,\u201d registered dietitian Julia Zumpano told <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/health.clevelandclinic.org\/how-to-add-more-iron-to-your-diet\">the Cleveland Clinic<\/a>. \u201cTalk to
