{"id":279059,"date":"2025-11-08T09:52:11","date_gmt":"2025-11-08T09:52:11","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us\/279059\/"},"modified":"2025-11-08T09:52:11","modified_gmt":"2025-11-08T09:52:11","slug":"works-by-late-artist-louis-copt-available-for-purchase-at-downtown-lawrence-pop-up-gallery-news-sports-jobs","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us\/279059\/","title":{"rendered":"Works by late artist Louis Copt available for purchase at downtown Lawrence pop-up gallery | News, Sports, Jobs"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>&#13;<br \/>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t&#13;<\/p>\n<p>                                    <img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/11\/IMG_9259-400x300.jpg\"  alt=\"\"\/><\/p>\n<p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t&#13;<\/p>\n<p class=\"photo_credit\">photo by: Bremen Keasey\/Journal-World<\/p>\n<p>&#13;<\/p>\n<p id=\"caption\">Original works from the late Lawrence artist Louis Copt are pictured at a pop-up gallery at 812 Massachusetts St. <\/p>\n<p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t&#13;<\/p>\n<p>A downtown Lawrence pop-up gallery opened Friday to celebrate \u2014\u00a0and offer for sale \u2014 the work of longtime local artist Louis Copt, <a href=\"https:\/\/www2.ljworld.com\/news\/general-news\/2025\/may\/09\/longtime-lawrence-artist-louis-copt-known-for-kansas-landscape-paintings-dies\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">who died this year<\/a> at age 76. <\/p>\n<p>The gallery, at 812 Massachusetts St., includes a collection of prints and original works from Copt, who was known for his landscape paintings, murals and other art pieces.<\/p>\n<p>Copt\u2019s widow, Phyllis Copt, told the Journal-World that most of the paintings and works for sale are from his archives and include watercolors, winter scenes of Douglas County and the Flint Hills, paintings of barns, and landscapes based on the couple\u2019s travels in France and Spain. <\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s a collection of his career, history and what he loved to do,\u201d Phyllis said. <\/p>\n<p><img width=\"864\" height=\"648\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/11\/Louis-signature1.jpg\" class=\"attachment-large size-large\" alt=\"\" decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\"\/><\/p>\n<p class=\"photo_credit\">photo by: Courtney Bernard\/LMH Health Foundation<\/p>\n<p id=\"caption\">The rooftop garden renovation at LMH Health, completed in May, features a large mural called \u201cKansas Symphony of Seasons\u201d painted by local artist Louis Copt.<\/p>\n<p>Louis started painting full-time in the mid-1980s. In 2011 he was named \u201cGovernor\u2019s Artist\u201d by the Kansas Arts Commission, a recognition of outstanding contributions to the arts and culture in Kansas \u2014 one of many other honors bestowed on his work. In his career, he traveled with the Kansas Geological Survey on a 16-day \u201cre-photographic expedition\u201d through the Grand Canyon as the official artist and led painting workshops to the Kansas Flint Hills and art travel programs to Washington, D.C., Los Angeles and Paris. <\/p>\n<p>Louis also has had a hand in painting multiple murals around Lawrence, including a mural of a prairie fire on the south side of Mass Street Music, 1347 Massachusetts St. \u2014 a collaboration with Kansas City muralists Isaac Tapia and Rico Alvarez \u2014 and a large mural called \u201cKansas Symphony of Seasons\u201d in the rooftop garden at LMH Health. He also had an open studio at the Lawrence Arts Center, and Phyllis said he \u201cloved to teach\u201d other artists over many years. <\/p>\n<p>Along with the original paintings on display and for sale at the gallery, Phyllis said there are posters and notecards he had designed for the Bert Nash Community Mental Health Center and the Lawrence Public Library.
